During your HSC course, you used models to explain phenomena and/ or make predixtions.
a) DESCRIBE steps involved in modeling the dehydration of ethanol [3 marks]
b) DISCUSS the limitations of the model you made [3marks]

this was in last years FSHS half yearly
it was worth 2 and 2 =O
1. - Used toothpicks and different colour play dough to represent different atoms and relative sizes
- black = carbon, yellow = sulfur, white = oxygen, red = hydrogen
- we created a molecule of ethanol and sulfuric acid and showed how the sulfuric acid transforms the ethanol into ethylhydrogen sulfate where it than reacted with another ethylhydrogen sulfate to reform sulfuric acid, ethene and water

2. -2D representation , not portraying 3d structure
- accurately shows relationship of relative atomic sizes and bonding between atoms
-The different bonding types cant be shown like hydrogen bonding in water, and ionic bonding in sulfuric acid
-ethene is a covalent molecule and electrons are shared but this representation doesnt show this mobility
