However, if my relationship was dying and could not be recovered by any means, and a new man comes along, then I might consider it.

If you loved the current partner, you wouldnt think twice about leaving them for someone else. Its that simple. People cheat (which is essentially what you're asking about) because they are unhappy in their current relationship. Looking back, if you do cheat on someone you thought you loved, you realise that you didnt, that there were problems, and its those problems and unhappiness that drive people away.
