If you take subjects like Science, you will have to do labs, but my understanding is that you do not have to do readings.

See, if you do an Arts/Humanities/Eco&Bus subject you can have up to 150 pages of reading a week, which is like homework.

If you do Sciences, you don't have the reading, but instead you'll have a 5 hour lab every fortnight or something to that effect.

I can't speak for other subjects but I imagine its the same. The difference between a lab and a straighforward tutorial is that they usually involve extra apparatus of some kind like computers or well, labs (ie. Science labs)

Speaking of 'Readings'.

How do you guys do it? Do you just skim through? Do you read and highlight important parts as you go? Do you summarise everything and write it down on an exercise book?

Just would be good to get your opinions on this guys.

I don't do mine.

I should.

When I do, I highlight and jot down important points either on a seperate piece of paper or on the reading itself.

Re: whats lab?

How much time do you guys spend reading a week? I think I'll be transferring to a 'reading' subject next year. Science blows. Labs are always murder. :p

Re: whats lab?

Apparently you're supposed to read one hour for every hour you're in a subject. So standard 2 hour lecture/1 hour tutorial subject = 3 hours and .'. 3 hours worth of reading.

It truly depends. Government subjects (which is my major)... dude, you could read forever and not cover the material. In general, a 'reading' subject means that there are contending approaches which means that there are always different perspectives to try.

Your profile tells me you are an 04er which means you are in 2nd year? As a very rough guide I'd say expect about 50 pages of reading per week per subject which depending on how switched on you are should take you about an hour or so.

Re: whats lab?

A "lab" is generally a subject where equipment not normally used in tutorials is required for use either by the teacher, or by the students. This might be anything from a computer, to a piano, and not just a science lab.

Re: whats lab?

my labs involve anything from plating out cultures and staining bacteria (pretty fun) , to hours looking at things under the microscope (not so fun...) to practicing surgical techniques and extracting teeth (loads of fun!)

Not all labs are the same, in vet we have 3-4 different labs, used for very different things, Microbiology, Anatomy, Post Mortems, Surgery, Parasitology, and of course Biology and Chemistry, the bane of all science students in first year (actually, Biology is not that bad, you get to count the number of bugs in dirt, and cut up rats...)

So labs can be fantastic, or can be horribly dull and long, it just depends what you like. And usually there is pre and post lab work you have to do, like readings and calculations and stuff, so you cant just go in unprepared.

Re: whats lab?

Chemistry labs are shithouse. They're long and most of the demonstrators are deadshits. Except for this one guy in our physical lab who gave us chocolates because we finished our lab before 5. :D

Biochemistry labs are quite long (5 hours). Usually you'd finish by 5, but sometimes they can run past 6. Most of the pracs are based on colorimetry/any use of the spectrophotometer. Most of the demonstrators are nice. The lecturers are awesome (especially Gareth Denyer :D).

1. I did. Its a legit question and thus deserves a legit answer.
2. I did. The fobby grammar was annoying the buggery out of me.
