are the generations just getting smarter or wat?
why are all the cut offs constantly increasing?
whens the point that its gonna stop and actually decrease again??

eg. B Social Science at UNSW was:
70.00 in 2001
77.00 in 2002
82.65 in 2003
85.30 in 2004

in just a short period of 4 years it bounced from 70 to 85.

keep this up and by the time it hits 2007 it will b like 100.00 !!!!

More people are wanting to get into university. More people are doing the HSC due to increases in study allowences for students and also the promotion of completing the full 13 years of education. This has many reasons behind it including the idea that a smarter nation will be better in the long run, and while people are in school, they aren't unemployed meaning the government looks good. More people doing the HSC plus a growing idea that you NEED a university degree to get a good job means more people want to get into university. This increase in people also includes the population growth which means that theres more students than there ever were and will probably increase as time goes by.

And due to cutbacks or stagnant places in universities due to policies, there's more demand but only the same supply which means that most courses will experience increases in UAI cutoffs.

This was all just made up by common sense and reasoning though so there's probably many a floor in that idea.

which it will, its one of the law of big numbers, if the number of people increase, there will most likely be a proportional increase in the numbers of people getting particular marks.

eg. 100 people, 1 person gets 100. 100,000 people, Approx 1000 gets 100.

Course cutoffs increase or decrease due to 2 main factors:

1) supply/demand for that course
2) funding at that uni.

Exactly what I was going to say. The supply and demand schedule for the course. You can look it up in any preliminary economics text or just simply see that when the supply decreases, UAI goes up or when demand increases, UAI goes up.

Supply has decreased because of cut government funding and demand has increased because of deregulating the market, ie our education system is increasingly being opened up to international demand and coupled with study allowances and other incentives to study, you have several factors boosting the UAI.

I agree with what everyone has said. Its also due to the fact that people are wanting to do some courses more than others. While some courses may be rising, others are falling (eg. IT). As people said, its all about supply and demand. I have eco exam on Monday :S.

Different industry sector booms/busts will also increase/decrease particular university courses. eg IT bubble burst led to decrease interest in IT related fields at uni.....which leads to the cutoff poitnts.....etc.
