And what relation does it have to force, impulse, etc.?

Silly question, I know, but I can't seem to get a decent textbook answer.

If asked, what would your answer be?

Inertia: An object in space will remain at a uniform motion or at rest, in a straight line path, unless acted on by an external force.

Inertia is the tendancy of an object to maintain its state of motion, be that a state of rest or a state of motion

An object will stay in its current state of motion unless an unbalanced external force is acted upon it.
