A Bachelors in Science (Maths), am i able to move from that to Advanced Mathematics in the first year?

Say if i finish my Maths degre, what possibilities does that open up for a career? Where could i work? Examples.

Yes you can move provided you show ability and potential in the Normal Mathematics units, you are able change your stream from Mathematics to Advanced Mathematics. At the University of Sydney, you need a minimum of 48 credit points of Intermediate and Senior Advanced Mathematics (2nd/3rd Year) with a credit average.

So many possibilities, but the prospect of getting a job is ultimately up to you and your socialising/networking abilities.

1. Finance (banks)

2. Engineering (Any manufacturing company)

3. Research (Universities)

4. Education (School or University)

5. Statistics (ABS but quite difficult)

The things in brackets are just examples, there are many more possibilities of course.

Then this begs the question "If I wanted to get an Engineering Job, why don't I just study a degree in Engineering? Why would I do a BSc?". The answer to that is because a BSc is much more general and gives you flexibility because you can pick a major and perhaps even a second major (sometimes called a minor). So suppose you are doing your BSc and during 1st Year you decide that you like things to do with money, then you can choose to major in Financial Mathematics. If you think you like Research, then perhaps a major in Pure Mathematics is best. If you like Engineering, perhaps Applied Mathematics is best for you etc etc.

1. At UNSW you need to have done 36 credit points of subjects - so basically... a whole year of study - and you need to have a 70 WAM overall (basically a straight average of at least 70 in all your subjects), and 80 WAM at least for your maths subjects. Quite a task - so not only do you need a mid-credit average overall, you need a good solid range distinction just to be considered.

Further, read up on Advanced Maths at different unis. It's not the same from uni to uni.

So really, if you're interested in Adv Maths - you take it straight away because it's arguably much harder to get in through transfer, than if you picked it straight off the bat after HSC.

2. Lots of things. AMSI (Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute) publishes a brochure called "Maths ad(d)s" where they basically reproduce copies of job ads that ask for maths skills. Vary varied range.
