The Eee runs OpenOffice.org, which is compatible with most MS Office stuff, except macros and a few really complex things.

If you want you can install XP, but don't do that. (Yeah, I'm really unbiased - see my username.)

Eees are shit. Unless you have the fingers off a spider monkey, it's impossible to type efficiently with the shitty keyboard. Also, how cheap can you be? You're getting a mini laptop for under $500, yet you still want to save more money.

Buy a MacBook instead. The extra $1000 is totally worth it.

I tried out one at JBHIFI, and I have to say to type on it properly i.e. touch typing is quite hard because it is so small. Straight after it I tried the macbook air and that was like typing on any other computer.

As for using it, that's quite easy.

^felt the same way when i was in-store but once you sit down and start typing properly you get used to it quickly.

saying that, i never expected much from a 8x3-inch keyboard.
