I'm currently in my 4th and final year of undergrad BA/BCom at the University of Auckland. Next year I'm looking to go to Australia to do my Honours in Economics. I've already been in touch with the Honours convenor at ANU and I'm probably applying for Melbourne too, but I just wanted to get some expertise from those of you who actually go there.
I'm definitely looking to go into research (hence ANU being, so far, my primary option), but I think quality of lecturers, job opportunities afterwards, where I live etc. matter too.
The other thing is, I'm confused about ANU's "Honours in Economics" and "Honours in Applied Economics" distinction. You need a higher grade to get into Honours in Economics, but you don't need Econometrics or even have to take it?! That seems insane to me. I'd do Applied but its prerequisites are lower, so I'm thinking it's a "less prestigious" degree? Does it matter?
Also, how hard is it to get in? I know that you need to get invited to ANU Honours, but what kind of grade do you need? In New Zealand, we have the full scale of grades - A+ down to D-. I'm averaging an A- (80-85%) in Economics (which is a High Distinction in ANU I think), and that's about my conjoint degree GPA as well.
Would appreciate all the thoughts and comments I can get!
