Why does being at a good school matter? (1 Viewer)

I dont understand why being at a really good selective school means instantly youll get really good uai's. I thought that no matter what marks you get, you will be individually given a uai with no bias or advantage/disadvantage on what school you are in.

After all, isnt that fair?

well if you are at a selective school, yes you should get a good uai cause you are spose to be smarter than the average bear

Schools aren't taken into account when the UAI is calculated. Just the marks that they receive.

To some extent school does make some differences. But not towards calculating the UAI.

This includes:

<li> More competition, hence more people working harder
<li> If you are trying to make up for bad marks, being in a poor performing school won't help
<li> More smarter students to help you and motivate you

dont forget the pool of marks your school earns for the 50% that determines ur UAI

The school you attend is not taken into account when awarding marks, this would be discrimination. However, unless you are ranked in the top 3 or so in your class, it is important that your class does well, because if the top 3 people fall on their faces in the exam, you also do by default for your assessment mark. Such is the incentive to do well in your internal assessments throughout the year.

In theory-the school your go to should not matter.
In practice...it probably WILL make a difference, in terms of your environment, pressure, competition, etc. But at the end of the day, it's up to you, and you don't have to go to some fancy private or selective school to do well. And going to a private or selective school is no guarantee for a good UAI either.

Generally, if you attend a school that is not in the top 200, you are at a 'disadvantage' (and I use that term very loosely). In some ways, the UAI reflects on the quality of the education by that school and the quality of the students.

dont forget that selective is just that, selective, selecting the academic talented, so of course the pool of marks wil have a greater change to be of a higher average...
