Hey all,

Ill be the first to admit that I am completely hopeless when it comes to the hardware side of computers, especially networks. I basically wanted to set up a wireless connection for only the dialup internet so i can share it and be on at the same time with my PC and laptop, I was wondering if this is possible (note i dont want to set up a network, only share the connection)? If it is, what exactly would i need to purchase, I know that neither of the 2 have a wireless network card, so basically i have nothing at the moment. My PC is running XP Home (and will be the one thats connected to the phone line) and my laptop is on XP Pro.

Thanks!

I don't think you'd be able to.

Wall -(phone line)-> Computer -(wireless)-> laptop

.. Won't work. You can't manage a laptop with a wireless nic, from a computer with a wireless nic. Dialup poses a problem as you can't share it using most routers (As far as I know most support only broadband).

The reason I believe would be because the phone line has to go into a modem before it can be managed by a router

If you could connect the connection to a router, you may be able to set it up as so:

Wall outlet --(Phone line)--> External Modem --- (connected through cable) ---> Wireless Router (4 port switch).

You could then connect both your computer and laptop with wireless cards, or cable one of the ports of the switch to your desktop, and use a wireless card in the laptop.

If both PC's have a Wireless Network Card, it *MAY* be possible.
