With Windows XP, there are only 3 colour variations when it comes to Visual Styles, unless you use third-party apps or hacked DLLs (uxtheme.dll located in system32)

To change your colour scheme, to either Olive (green) or Silver (metallic)

Right click your desktop, properties
Click the appearance tab

Under "Color scheme" you will find:

* Default (blue)
* Olive Green
* Silver

Click one of them, (preferrably silver) and then hit apply/OK.

That's it :)

If you're looking for other (unsupported by Microsoft) Visual Styles, then you'll have to get TGTsoft's StyleXP to run themes or hack your own DLLs (a cool procedure in itself :))

/edit
This goes in IT Stuff :)
It'll get more views (well, I would view it earlier :))

i may be able to help you hack the DLL, to allow you to use third party themes as Huy pointed out. Perhaps you can PM me.

LOL you're a mod!

Okay, I hacked mine too.. but I'm using the default theme now (Luna/default blue), as I get tired of new VS's after a day or two.

:)

Shhh... lol... they should serious not call it hack, all it is is actually changing 1 line of Hex value in the dll so that it can read non-digitally signed themes.

goto www.themexp.org to get new styles.. when stylexp runs out of trial time.. just double click the downloaded style (from themexp.org) and it will open the appearacne tab in windows xp display properties and ull see it in the drop down menu thingy :D

MicK_eT, that would be more difficult than replacing 1 file ;)

But it depends on the user, and his/her computing skills level.

You can hack a dll (automated process, unless you're cool doing it manually like Winston here :p) -- or you can just download a pre-patched uxtheme and replace the existing file.

:)

Either way, it works.

this is the best skin for win xp

you need the hacked dll to use it

Edit: it is ~100k

and you need winrar www.rarlabs.com to unrar it

Edit2: in case you don't know how to install themes.
process:
1. hack uxtheme.dll
2. unrar into windows/resources/themes folder
3. double click on msstyles file

Edit3: most compact skin

Let's not get into the "which skin is the best" debate... it's all up to the user and his/her own preferences/tastes :)

But we all know Windows Classic is the best non-VS theme heheh :p

Second to Luna (default: blue), you can never get tired of it, and if you've tried other VS's, you'll revert back to original luna once you've tried the rest.

:)
