Mr Sim instructed his assistant to place an order for 5 pairs of leather shoes and a number of paris of canvas shoes. A parit of leather shoes costs two and a half times as much as a pair of canvas shoes. His assistant made a mistake in the order and the number of pairs of the two types of shoes had been interchanged. This increased the bill by 33 and a third percent.

Find the ratio of the numbrs of pairs of canvas shoes to the number of pairs of leather shoes in the order that Mr Sim instructed his assistant to place.

For your information, I found this in a textbook that a friend of my fathers claims is a year 6 textbook in the top school of Pakistan. I find that hard to believe. In this very textbook, the following topics are covered:
Volume and surface area of cuboids, prisms, cylinders.
basic algebra
algebraic equations
basic geometry
properties of a triangle
etc

My point is, if you had to take a guess, which year would you say this textbook is for?

and on a side note, what is the GCE 'O' level examination?

That looks like about yr8/9 in aust i think? There's nothing really difficult there, just interpretting the question and solving a couple of sim. eqns. (mind you, i know a number of yr12 graduates who wouldn't be able to do it)

Thats why they outsource, cause its cheaper to get them to do it, when they have learnt to the same level or above.

ehe, i think so. It is year 10 (I think) in england.

ANYWAY, the only thing left is the answer to the darn question. I can't get the ratios. :(

The answer is 2canvas shoes:1 leather shoe.

Working:

The cost of 1 set of canvas shoes is 1unit.
The cost of 1 set of leather shoes is 2.5units.

Let the cost of the original order be x.
Let the unknown number of shoes be n.

so 12.5+n=x
2.5n+5=1&1/3x ---- [1]
Sub x=12.5+n into 1
1&1/3(12.5+n)=2.5n+5
16&2/3+1&1/3n=2.5n+5
11&2/3=1&1/6n
n=10

Since it asked for a ratio.
Ratio--- n:5
=10:5
=2:1 Canvas to Leather

Just the simulataneous equations bit, but then I could see someone learning it in yr 6 it doesnt require that much background knowledge.

hehhe, learning of basic algebra, and of solving normal algebraic equations and THEN solving simultaneous equations, and EVEN simultaneous equatiosn with three variables (which i still havent got the hang of) is simply not done in australia. :)
