Hi everyone,

Is anyone applying to Law at UWS to start in 2009?

I was just wondering whether I should do Business at UTS or Law at UWS if I would like to try transfering to other Uni the yr after.

What do you guys think is best, do Business at UTS and transfer internally to law or do Law UWS and transfer out to another uni?

Thanx ppl.

The short version of a long and complicated answer is - if your heart is absolutely set on doing Law, go with the Law at UWS option.

If you are dead set on law - its not the best idea to do the business degree and aim to transfer as there is no guarantee you will be able to transfer so better to start off in law. You can always try to transfer to UTS law from UWS law also if you want.

It all depends on what you want to do, where you live, what your interests are, whether youw ant to work and where etc etc etc

Hey ,

I had the same predicament as you months ago. In order to quench my niggling curiosities, i did an extensive "research" about which uni specialises what i really want to do. During the HSC, ive visited campus tours, gathered lots of uni brochures, talk to uni staff and students, both alumni and current.....and yes, i asked lots and lots of questions.

and even before HSC exams started, ive realised that out of all the seven universities that ive looked into, it hit me that UWS LAW offers what i really want.
UWS law is a young course, fresh with new ideas. If the main purpose of law is to reflect our every changing society, then i go for the uni that offers new set of ideologies.
Plus, theyre gaining more and more good publicity, ive heard that they won heaps of mooting competition, including the prestigious ALSA mooting competition, even Justice Kirby did a lecture there and recruited an alumni . I heard that they have strong connections with local courts, national and even in the international sphere ( as what alumnis and the UWSLA told me )

Aside from law, UWS Communication studies ( major in journalism) appeals to me because it is pragmatic, most of its studies involves going out there and doing first hand investigation. The Dean of Communication studies, Lynette Burns, told me that they reach out to local radio and news. i found that really amazing because i want to work in local news network

secondly, its accesible from my home and the multi-campus arrangement does not bother me at all.

finally, ENVIRONMENT. UWS sits in the west, away from the hussles of the city life. If i want to study a challenging course such as double degree in law, i want to surround myself with a relaxed, subdued atmosphere. Basking myself in the busy urban lifestyle in the city at the same time juggling on my uni studies with work plus my disadvantaged circumstance would lose my concentration on law and eventually, will dissuade me to continue.

Sad yet true, transfers are tough these days. My brother luckily transferred from B. Arts to B. Engineering/Science at USYD because his UAI was high, and he got Two HD's on his subject. Yet according to him , the likelihood of successful transfers are considered to be classified as " lucky breaks". But why would you waste one year( and HECS money) at university, studying for a " foot in the door" course that you're not so " dead set on"?? I'm not bagging you, i apologize, but i dont get the logic in that . If you got the marks, then why not start off with law at UWS and transfer to another uni later

What Im saying is, you have to start thinking "outside of the box called stereotypes" and realise that at the end of the day, its your efforts and your life. Its you who knows your limits, your capabilites and as what Lara1986 says, your heart desires. Reputations and stereotypes are part of human nature, but we have the choice to lean on it or break it.

LOL, are you a UWS promoter? Don't Lie. I bet if your UAI was like 96ish, you would have chosen Mac Law. I guess you would say anything to make your UWS (U Went Superb!!! lol) course sound better than it really is.

LOL

your "cynical" mind has left me LOL-ing indeed..
No, im not a UWS promoter ( i wish i was..if i get paid..LOL)
as you can see in my profile, im from the west.

Mac law?? yes, i did receive the lighthouse scheme up to four bonus points.
and next to UWs, mac law was my second option.
but the thing is , transport issues.
trust me, i love the mac uni feel too but the transport issues...
i went to mac uni open day, both in 2006 and this year
and guess what?
i have to take two bus trips and two trains..in one way only.

take the bus from where i live- fairfield station
fairfield -granville
granville- seven hills
ride the bus all the way to mac uni via m4

( that gave me headaches)

i heard about some transport bay that takes me to mac uni from strathfield, parra
and "the railway project" to mac uni is taking longer to make it into reality

I know i know...lets just see how my one year at UWS LAw will go

96-ish uai?..eherm...cant you see my sig?

UWS promoter?? my ass. LOL

You could also go Fairfield - Strathfield - Epping via train, then take a five minute bus ride to mac, it's what i used to do..but that's still quite a pain. UWS is much easier to travel to, that's for sure.

Bravo, bravo, a very entertaining speech ill assure you, but, sorry to break it to ya...it didn't work... Trust me, ive tried showing some enthusiasm towards uws, and people on these forums just make it into some kind of joke regardless what course you are doing, but the thing i like about you, is the fact you have the guts and determination to defend your opinion, really you did, not many who go to uws are willing to defend their views for the uni but rather accept it as a shit hole, and well, just go for the hell of it, its all because they become too easily ridiculed and mislead with the whole presitge crap, but what you said really aroused my attention, good on you, and dont be too shy to admit your a uws supporter even though you arent getting paid for it, its kind of obvious in the tone of your writting, but dont worry thats a good thing, keep it up :)

hahaha i didn't want to reply to this thread but felt compelled to do so by the fact that BringSexyBack, I was in your exact same shoes just last month. I had to think through the dilemma of Law at UWS and Business at UTS.

Yes, the early offer I received from UWS Law did tempt me to some extent because as opposed to the others-that it was DEFINITE and it was SURE that I was gonna get into that course and I knew that I was going to do this and that a month before everyone else did. And at one point I forcibly convinced myself that UWS Law was the way to go, because of the practicality of the course, not theoretically based like other uni's allegedly are, progressively growing Law School, new and fresh, lecturers graduated from Usyd/unsw/uts....blah. But ultimately, I have chosen UTS Business over UWS Law. :spin:

Well, I have thought this through so many f*cking times. Questions like, does it really matter what uni I go to? It's not the uni that gives you the success, it's you. I mean, law is law, all unis use the same/similar books, and where ever u go, you still end up with the same degree. (And lol I do admit that I believe in all that "university prestige" thing in a way, too.)

Aaand after all that mentally-straining thinking, I came to the conclusion that well, if I'm combining law with business anyway, might as well do it at UTS- a uni I'd love to go to, if you know what I mean. I can always do law later if I don't get into UTS Law (I'm applying for UTS Law as well, having been given 10 concessional points through the inpUTS Scheme. This whole thing is just my "worst case scenario". Lol.), through a: combining it with Law after one year, b: transferring to B Laws after one year, or c: moving to UWS BusCom/Law and have as much of my business units credited as possible, AND even d: do Law postgrad in whichever uni u desire. Just sort of keep your mind open to all the other options that are available for you. I mean, its not the end of the world if you don't get to do Law in say, USyd/UNSW/UTS in your first year, or if you end up doing Law at UWS.

I've also done my research, compared the structure of the UTS Business Degree to that of UWS, and found out that the UTS Business degree is so much more flexible than the latter because it allows you different options, and the one that caught my eye was the option where you could chose 1 major, and 2 sub-majors, one of which is Foundations in Law which: "is for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Business who are considering transferring between the different degree programs or intending to undertake law studies as a second degree. It provides students with the key legal knowledge of a lawyer and has recognition as substantive law subjects in any law degree. " <- from the UTS Handbook.

And i don't know about you, or anyone else, but I believe that the uni you go to does affect ur learning to a certain extent. Not just the whole prestige thing, but the environment, the atmosphere, and the cohort you are with as well. And personally, having gone to both uni's just a couple of days ago, although the UWS campus wasn't bad (it was pretty good actually), UTS gave me good vibe that I felt I just couldn't say no to. I'm no expert but I thought the atmosphere was more positive, too. And that affected my decision alot as well.

So BringSexyBack, I suggest you think through your priorities, like how much you really want to do law, or would you really care what uni u end up in, etc. Also I guess you could check the UWS Law syllabus, and see whether you like the course structure, compare it to the ones with the other uni's you're considering, and check out if they offer the electives you like. Just remember, if there's a will, there's a way.

Because I had the exact same view on UTS Business and UWS Law as you, and the options I had available, but unlike you, I decided to put down UWS Law above UTS Business.

Ohh. I see. Lol, so you mean you hope I'm wrong about my decision? well I've accepted the UWS Law/BComm Early Offer they gave me just in case some freak thing happens that would make me change my mind. Otherwise, my heart is set on UTS Bus/Law or UTS Bus. :spin:

ps one question ppl doing differnt alternatives in there combined degrees eg ur doing journalism and im doing bus/com do they still go to the same law classes?
cause were doing a combined degree in law, our law units for this autumn session are quite in the same format, i believe its intro to law and torts law + two core units from your other degree..

in terms of law classes ( eg. tutes and seminars) , that depends on which times do you register for these lol..
