Rather than forcing everyone to do "national service" how bout the young libs quit politics, create a charity and serve the community. And then become part-time lobbyists.

Actually I think it should be incorporated into high school. However I don't like their perspective "Create a low cost workforce" <-- slavery anyone? "instill work ethic? <-- slavery anyone?

lol they just don't like university graduates....
I wish the social conservatives would form their owen bloody party... wrongly idealised national service, internet censorship, what are we coming to?

James Davis, 28, who served in the army in Iraq for six months, said compulsory national service would lead to young people having a greater appreciation of their country.

Thankfully it was not actually yet YL policy. It was put before the YL Federal conference yesterday where nobody was even willing to move it. My faith is restored.

Bryce wrote that if leaders, or NSW Labor, have let us down, it is as much our fault as it is theirs. Great nations, he said, live by virtue. He referred not merely to the virtue of a handful of politicians but to the virtues of the people. What the people do with respect to their leaders is at least as important as what their leaders do to them.

Mum forwarded this to me, you might have already seen it.

I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl, and she said she wanted to be Prime Minister some day.

Both of her parents, Labor, were standing there, so I asked her,

"If you were Prime Minister what would be the first thing you'd do?"

She replied, "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people."

"Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "But you don't have to wait until you're Prime Minister to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull up the weeds, sweep my patio, and I'll pay you $50. Then I'll take you over to the Coles where a homeless chap hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food or a new house."

She thought that over for a few seconds 'cause she's only six.

And while her Mum glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked,

"Why doesn't the homeless man come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

And I replied, "Welcome to the Liberal Party."

Her parents still aren't talking to me.

Depends; on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest, how much do you like little boys?

Hat tip: we're looking for answers of 7 and up here.

Nice story, still doesn't justify how wealth the wealth gap is increasing between the quintiles nor does it justify the gap between standard of living of aboriginals and white Australians.

If you see a common humanity, then you're of the labor party.

I just hate unwarranted optimism.
Look people, the world is a shit place, there's no such thing as a utopia for humans and the Labor party has abandonned it's socialist principles in favour for economic conservatism because even a retard like Garrett can recognise that markets work a hell of a lot better than the government.

Rudd reveals $115b loss - National - smh.com.au

The Federal Government has suffered a whopping $115 billion fall in revenue due to the global recession, the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, announced today.

Speaking in Canberra after the full ministry was briefed on the state of the nation's finances, Mr Rudd said the plunge had caused the budget to go into deficit.

He did not say how big the deficit was but promised the Government would release updated budget figures in the next few weeks and not wait until the May budget.

The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, said company tax revenue was down by $50 billion, income tax down by $13 billion, GST down by $10 billion and other taxes by $2 billion.[...]
Ouch.

Why does such a gap require justification?
Because government need to be held accountable to their citizens. Not just the rich, not just suburbia but the entirety of our population.

Furthermore to you socialist haters, you can label me as a socialist, or a labor party spokesman... but I find it hard to distinguish between labor and liberals... the communism/socialism implemented so far (or that which has stuck the strongest in our memories) resembles to me more like fascist dictatorship.
I know monetary oppression is better than military oppression but should we really rest of our laurels?
(this ties into the justification of the gap, we enforce certain conditions on them because they don't conform to our way of life).

The free market you hold so dear is fundamentally flawed because their is no proper transparency. Media mainly rewrite press releases, repackaging the corporate message... even my so-called beloved Wayne Swan refused to admit the plight of the Australian economy in blind faith.
Our unemployment statistics were only so low because the definitions we rewritten, "historic levels" my arse...
The sub prime fiasco was created from a disparity between market value and real value, allowing american business to wrought the system and post big numbers.
Furthermore we are almost dependent on growing populations to support our baby-boomers and aging populations, which goes against what our country can sustain...

Which ever way you look at it, that price mechanism you put your faith so blindly in is fundamentally flawed; and all that follow its gospel will inevitably suffer.

No, that's based on welfare dependence.

EDIT: You give people a financial incentive to remain in a community where there are no jobs, no education and no hope of feeling any self worth and then blame capitalism when they sit around all day huffing turpentine and raping their kids. You're an intellectual fraud.

SYDNEY - A private gauge of inflation jumped in January as seasonal increases in utility, drug and transport costs put an end to three consecutive months of declines.
The TD Securities-Melbourne Institute monthly inflation gauge rose 0.8 per cent in January, after a 0.2 per cent dip in December. Annual inflation picked up to 2.7 per cent, from 2.2 per cent the month before, but remained within the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) two to three per cent target band.
Taken from Business Spectator

So now we have inflation as well.

Don't go giving me that income dependence crap, you are trying to get rid of a symptom without realising the underlying problem.

Edit: When did I claim to be an intellectual?
