Job prospects afterwards for the average student, pretty good; for top students, veeery damn good.

You can practise law with a LLB or B Laws that you get from, say, ANU (whose cutoff, in 2008, was 95), Wollongong University (90?), University of Western Sydney (~90), and several others, but many firms are tied up in the notion of 'prestige'.

If you don't make Sydney's two law schools, go to ANU. If you don't mind moving further away, go to Victoria/elsewhere.

Aren't there several combined law courses in Macquarie and UTS with cut off's around 90ish?

Ultimately, it doesn't matter where you obtain your Law degree from but if you're having difficulties on the criteria of universities, base your decision on what uni offers the best secondary degree that you are completing (Comm, Engo, Arts, International Studies etc etc).

and UNSW was one of the top for quality of teaching,
and they were saying how they have a new law building.

The good universities guide recommends UNSW as the best but overall Sydney is more prestigous than UNSW mainly because it is the oldest law school. I think historicall speaking only Usyd graduates have become high court justices from our state but that said South Australia (the state not the Uni) hasn't ever had one either - this stat too is probably reflective of the fact that Syd has been around much longer.

USyd or UNSW are very hard to get into (but you can easily transfer) but give you the best prospects. I was told Syd model themselves on the english schools whereas UNSW is the American style of teaching. It depends what you want - if you want to work in a big firm you really need to go to UNSW or Syd but generally its more important how you do in your degree then where you do it as a MP and long time lawyer told me.

ANU has a cutoff of 95.5 and is a group of 8 uni and has a law course that is top quality even if it isnt as prestigous as Sydney or UNSW. Melbourne's JD can only be done as a post graduate course but any G8 unis would be good.

Personally I am going to UNSW because frankly they are paying me to go there. Without a Scholarship I probably would have tried to get into Sydney but ANU was a very real option. Also keep in mind that USyd is also more expensive to live at (about 2k a year more for college).

I thought that Frigid and I civilly chased people like both of you away a long time ago. There are always more seventeen year olds ready to jump out of the woodwork though and rank law schools based on UAI cutoffs.

USyd does have a very high prestige, but I heard from my previous business law lecturer at Macquarie that if I want to treat myself well, don't study law there as there is a snobbish culture of discrimination. People there are from the north shore, with generations in their families in law, got networks, private school graduates; whereas I am a first generation Australian, didn't go to private school, didn't even go to public school here in Australia, don't have money, don't own a house, I rent. And I have no parents to depend on. They will crush me if I go there.

UNSW has a more friendly atmosphere.

I wish to transfer to either UNSW or UTS just for its practicality and friendly culture. I don't even fancy working for the Big 6 or any top tier commercial firm. The business world doesn't interest me, so I guess the prestige doesn't mean that much to me.

And why not consider University of Auckland, top uni in NZ, easy to get in, cheaper to study, if prestige is what you really value, even though basically any high school graduate can get in, they still have a very high reputation, well, it's not that easy to graduate.

If I were living in Queensland, Griffith really interests me, because of its emphasis on social justice and judicial justice.

I guess many students who did not get into USyd or UNSW or Monash, who got into other law school only because they did not make it to their top preferences. It is thus quite pointless to discuss the rankings.

I think law students should be mature enough to think through everything for yourself, and wherever you have set your mind on, based on thorough and logical thinking, work hard for your goal, don't care what other people say, or what the mainstream is.

Im just relaying what I have been told by a whole host of lawyers and an MP. I didn't mention anything about UAI cut offs other than that those two are harder to get into I even sighted ANU whose cut-off is far more achievable as a very good university to study law at - again relayed to me by a host of lawyers.
