Meh. To be honest, if it's in general, I don't see the fuss.

I wouldn't speak Japanese if I was with aussie friends at a Japanese university, unless I needed to. It's not as comfortable.

Classwork is understandible though, because they are supposed to be up to a certain standard (thanks to ELICOS).

i adopt the same stance regardless of what language.
if they're speaking australian and speak so badly that i cant understand then i get equally annoyed.

Yeah man, I wasn't singling out Japanese for any reason, it's just the first language that comes to mind. Add in Mandarin, German, Dutch, Spanish etc etc.

I was more meaning if they speaking in conversation in their native tongue. However, I still don't have probs with them attempting conversation in English, even if they don't get it spot on.

You'd be amazed that there are countries out there where the locals really appreciate you attempting to converse in their language, even if you're shit at it.

It's a program the language centre uses to prepare international students that have varying levels of competencies in English. Basically, it's used as a leveller to get all the International students into their degrees with a certain standard of abilities in English.

In reality though, there are students that come out of the program with better grasps of English than others.

It's a bit of a failure with some of the ones I've talked to. I reckon the lazy shits prey on it though, they act dumb so others will do their work.
