hey i was wondering if anyone could help me clear something up. i was revising some of my IPT work from when we designing websites and when i was looking at some sites i got confused over the difference between servers and web hosts?

like i get that the hosts have their own servers, but if you were to buy your own server does that mean you can host your own sites?
ie. massive sites like facebook and bored of studies, do they have their own massive servers or are they maintained through web host sites with massive GB web spaces?

thanks in advance!

if you were to buy your own server does that mean you can host your own sites - yes - given the right software

the eLearningWebsite I run at school is just a $1200 computer with Linux and other software - with a 24/7 internet connection handled by the DET so that part doesnt cost

the mIRC network I chat on has its servers hosted in the US since Australian hosting is more expensive.

Google is the other extreme - Google cluster has the following stats: 359 racks; 31654 machines; 63184 CPUs
