Hello,

I am thinking of doing a B Arts starting S2 this year I am trying to decide which 2 majors to do.

Does anyone here do Asian Studies? Is it worth doing this with something such as Chinese or Korean Studies? Or is it better to do something such as International relations or History? Or Can you do 2 Languages?

i dont hear of many people doing asian studies. i just dont think it would be that great to do asian studies.

however, it will depend on what you plan to do with your degree. if you plan to be using your skills in an international setting, international relations is a good complement. if you plan to teach, then history would be a good complement.

if you have trouble deciding, try talking to someone who lectures the courses you plan to take.

Hi

Can you do 2 Languages?
I spoke with the person at the Arts and Social Sciences Student Centre and they said that there would be problems doing languages if you're starting mid-semester.

Is it worth doing this with something such as Chinese or Korean Studies?
Depends if you like it or not. What field do you want to get into?

I'm majoring in Japanese Studies and Asian Studies.

Haven't actually started on the Asian Studies major though, but I've talked to the course coordinator about it and had a look into the major. Basically what you do in it are history subjects and culture (including modern) subjects.

She told me that the Asian Studies electives available this year will undergo some changes. Some of the currently available elective subjects may no longer be offered by 2010 (or was it 2011?) and replaced would be more leaning towards modern & popular culture... And possibly more interesting history subjects?

In regards to doing 2 language majors, yes you can. In fact I know at least a handful of people who are majoring in 2 languages. As for mid-year entry, unless you've had previous language knowledge/education, you probably won't be able to start on a new language until the next semester.

Oh and, Korean class is always fun. I did level 1 last year :D!

I'm doing asian studies and it definitely beats all my other subjects by a mile. I highly reccommend it, you cover everything in asia from religion to literature, film, politics, gender roles etc. It is just so interesting, i never get bored. Thats me personally though, maybe just give it a try if you want and change out of it after the first lecture if you hate it

To do a major in Asian studies, you will have to do the 2 first year cores (ARTS1210 and ARTS1211), and then any other relevant electives to do with Asia. Language courses can also be credited towards the major, BUT it must be at least level 2 or above language courses. That's for the Arts degree at least.

It might be different if you're doing B International Studies with the Asian Studies stream though.

I don't think that you have to decide on your majors immediately. If you are tossing up between a few courses then take them all, and next year decide what you want to do. You are going to have to do an extra (well kinda extra) semester somewhere along the line anyway so I wouldn't stress right now.

I know some people who have done Asian Studies and some people who have done IR. People like different things so what you major in can be quite a personal choice. Remember, while the most practical course for your career may seem appealing to take, if you go there an hate it chances are after suffering through it for three years you won't have done that well.

As they all said languages may be difficult to pick up mid semester. Alternatively, I guess you could just take an IR and history or something and see if you like it, and then next year start your languages.

Another question.

I've decided to do Asian Studies I checked the timetables and the classes weren't full in S1 so i'm hoping I can do it in S2.

As I need to do something else on the side as well due to B Arts needing Dual majors or a minor so say i take something like History, next year in S1 when Languages are available again can i transfer to one of those and drop History?

Hey everyone, I was just wondering how good my chances were of being accepted mid-years into BA/BSci at unsw? I'm currently at UWS studying int.business, and really want to change to Arts [which I should've chosen in the first place, damn parents ><].. I heard that if you've only studied for one semester in your first year, they only take your uai into account, is this true? Cos I really hope so...
