Fucked up, backward dating media culture:

Nine news tonight- spent 8 minutes on this story (which has no relevance to the future of this country) and then went,

Oh, in other news...the budget bla bla

We did only have the federal budget released last night! (you'd think it would have some importance)
tbh, this whole debacle over matthew johns and four corners is a lot more interesting than the motherfucker of a deficit which will take us a decade to pay off. it's a hook to get people watching.

Mathew Johns and his friends are thick as shit but it is getting to the point that pro footballers are going to have to get girls to sign a stat dec before they have a one night stand.

I do find it odd that the lady came out of the closet 7 years after the alleged assult, but you also must consider the stress & turmoil she must of been under during the time period. However unfortunately for Matthew Johns he is a public image, and any wrong doings or accusations towards him will effect his career. Channel 9 have every right to stand him down until things go on the low, people these days dont tolerate bad behaviour towards nrl and former nrl stars.

Regardless of the legitimacy of his actions here, he made a mistake right? A misjudgement, 7 years ago?

Who else here has skeletons in their closet?

Why are her intention exactly in going to the media with this, rather than seeking out Johns and confessing her situation to him personally and to his family etc?

What benefit will going to the media do, given the event is far from recent, and a police investigation was carried out many years ago?

So many questions here, yet the media jump on it? They've learnt nothing from the 'Pauline Hanson naked pictures' saga thanks to the DT.

Stat dec doesn't matter if you've been drinking. Null and void.

They should do what the dude said before and film it.
Yeah I know I was being tongue in cheek. I think filming someone could easily land you in trouble as well. "You filmed me without my consent etc." "I was too drunk to consent to being filmes". Not to mention those kinds of vids have a habit of leaking.

They'd be better off sticking with prostitutes.

And why is this thread #1 on today's hot topics? Because we're all posting on it! Create a thread about the budget for Christ's sake, why isn't there one already?

Sorry to be the enemy here.. but pretty much I think it's fine for nine to have given Johns the boot..it's not so much about whether it was consensual or disgraceful or whatever. what is important is that it obviously gained a lot of media attention and so what's best for nine as a station is to not condone johns' actions and the best way to show that they don't think a group of footy players queing up to have a go at some 19yo is alright is to sack johns.

Even if she said yes at the time, I hardly think she could have really been giving her knowing and willing consent to it, whether she was drunk or just feeling really pressured by having a room full of footy stars it still should have been clear to Johns and all the others present at the time that it was not in the girls best interests to have that done to her. What they did was morally wrong as the situation should, to a clear thinking person, have appeared wrong. Just another example of footy players thinking with their dicks.

The real problem here is that this kind of behaviour is another thing ingrained within 'footy culture' along with binge drinking. It's unfortunate that Johns has to be the victim in this case however having such a huge example made of him is probably going to be beneficial to preventing this kind of thing happening in the future.
I would have no problem with Nine standing Johns down if he was an employee of Nine at the time of the incident. This was seven years ago, and if legally he has still done nothing wrong, why should Nine penalise him? He was investigated and cleared, and he has apologised in the past, so why should this matter drag on? This is double jeopardy, and it should not occur. Johns received his punishment seven years ago (whether it was a minor slap on the wrist and appropriate for the situation is another discussion), so why is he punished again?

If you were involved in some act that you were cleared for several years ago, do you expect your employer to suspend you if the other party reiterates the claim again? Part of the reason is group sex is viewed as immoral by society, but one would not expect such incidents to have an effect on your current condition.

The woman should be provided support for what she feels is a traumatic experience, even if the others might not agree. If it were rape/sexual assault, then by all means prosecute them, and go down hard. But Johns has not been proven beyond reasonable doubt by the legal system, and he should be treated as innocent until this occurs. He is guilty of stupidity, but that is not a crime, and he should not be stood down now on something that has happened seven years ago which is totally irrevelant to his current employers.

Obviously you don't frequent the NCAP thread.

This can only be a good thing.

I'm guessing the only supportive justification for the actions against Johns now is that........he didn't receive enough media coverage at the time of the incident?

Other than that, i'm all ears.

Poor guy. Wanted to hug him when he was doing the interview on Current Affair or whatever.

(Did Kevin Rudd orchestrate this to draw attention away from the budget???)

Drunk, out wit da boiz, pick up a hot (possibly) chick, shes consents to the spitroast, other mates thought it would be funny to watch, and beat off. Stuff like this always happens not just in league.

Yes, it happens in other circles with an aura of latent and repressed homosexuality.
