hey,

I would like to study Mechanical or Mechatronic engineering at either UNSW, UTS or USYD,( in that order of preference for now..) but i have no idea which one of these is better than the other. I am also taking into account travel as i live in western suburbs.

Can anyone give me some direction on these unis and which would be better than the other.

Also,

I have heard that electrical engineering is the hardest discipline and knowing that there is study of electronics in Mechatronic Eng does this make it much harder than Mechanical (or 'hard' in general)

Thank you.

Mechanical engineering investigates the mechanics of machines (a lot of physics - one of the reasons it appeals to me). Mechatronics involves mechanical, electrical and software engineering so I personally would say it is the HARDEST engineering you can do! Electrical engineering is hard and it does appeal to me but I'm pretty sure that mechatronics is the hardest as it is basically used for robotics and other technological smart products.

My geographical knowledge of Sydney and how its uni's weigh in is pretty poor so don't rely on me to say oh that is where you should go! Why not go to the uni's themselves? You could probably walk up to the engineering student centres and ask to be shown around the areas. With mechatronics you would probably thrive in places such as the US or Japan where smart products and robots are being developed.

But anyway thats my advice!

I dont do engineering, but from what Ive heard UNSW is the best overall for engineering as a whole. A couple of people have told me that usyds engineering isnt very good, but they didnt say why. Not too sure about UTS.

USYD Engineering programs shouldn't even be considered as it is heavily outdated.
UTS may be a better alternative or better yet UNSW.
At UNSW they place emphasis on manufacturing courses which will intertwine with the main mechanical and design courses.
Plus there are many good lecturers at UNSW.

I have been to UNSW... my experience was very good, everyone seemed friendly and the school of Mech seemed very good (nice 5axis milling machine & 3D printer lol)... many people have told me that it is a very good uni for engineering.

UTS however has the benefit of being closer... i need only catch a train whereas for UNSW it is a train and bus(that its not free)... im just not really sure wat would be better atm...

On another note, is it just me or does UTS seem to target young ppl who arent sure of what they want to do [and possibly a less acedemic type person]... i think there info booklets are a bit over the top and need to be more to the point rather than having random pictures everywhere... UNSW seems to target a more balanced group of ppl (there info books are more serious lol)... can anyone verify??

Lol this sounds exactly like Deakin university!

I have an ok idea of what I want to do as I want it to be something that involves: maths, physics and possibly chemistry (although I can't fit it in). With Victoria I know that RMIT (RMIT, lol - Take away the 'R' and you get MIT, which apparently is the best uni for maths, physics and engineering students), Monash and Melbourne university (yes a lot of people would beg to differ but they can go away - Melbourne is a very reputable uni).

As for uni's travel can be an annoyingly tiring thing (especially for me being a connex commuter :burn:), but, you shouldn't choose your uni based upon travel distance, but, what appeals to you about it.

Anyway goodluck with HSC (UAI has disappeared because now NSW students on this forum are talking about some ATAR - why don't we all take something the same all around Australia).
