I'm for it, as it basically gets the rich to pay for healthcare =P
As said before, for a person earning 80K a year, they are not going to miss 600 bucks very much.

Australia is behind some other countries in dental care, though most of our healthcare standards are pretty good.

As for adding more flouride to the water, im guessing that was a sarcastic remark, if not - excess of flouride causes cancer =P

its only money mwahahaha

That's the way Australians are you see; we take care of one another. If no one likes this idea then an easy solution is to pack your shit and fuck off to the US.

^ Not necessarily, what will happen with a universal health care system is that the rich will have more access while the poor continues to wait. The reason why is because our Government is fucking stupid unfortunately. They're incapable of scattering fairness evenly.

This type of thinking really annoys me. What is it really saying? "If you disagree with any policy, get out"?

Are people not allowed to express their preference for other ways of doing things? Are people supposed to just pay the tax, no matter how high?

This mentality isn't productive in the slightest, because it ignores the problems of government inefficiency and lack of choice for the individual.

I think it is fair enough, providing they can prove that the extra .75% medicare levy is purely for funding of the scheme, and the government doesn't get a cut. Low income earners are not really going to be affected as tax offsets will pay for the increase. One of Rudd's better policies in my opinion.

this.

Another point is however , you can claim dental over 1500 back on tax anyway, but i guess this would mean no cost at the time, which is sometimes hard to scrape up

Governments are notoriously inefficient with these things anyway, because they are not being disciplined by the profit and loss system. It's very likely that private business would provide services cheaper and better.

Why would I want to help you?

If you want dental insurance do it the old fashioned way and get it youself by getting a job and building up your savings. And just because I oppose pork barrel waste spending why does that mean I should go to America? How is draining public funds patriotic?

But it is also very unlikely that people will go to the dentist in the private sector for checkups etc, and will wait until they absolutely have to. This way, the government effectively forces you to go to the dentist because it is costing you money anyway, so you may as well get something out of it.

I think it's a good idea. People might actually be more willing to see the dentist and hence take care of their teeth better. It also makes it cheaper for everyone. I certainly don't want to be paying close to $2k just to take out my 3 wisdom teeth! I mean, I'm already paying taxes so why shouldn't I get some of it back in terms of services such as dental care? And it's not like I'm missing the money taken out of tax--it's gone before I even see it.

I don't think this is classified under 'basic dental'.

Looking at the situation in America, where the insurance companies are driven by greed and excess and take a huge chunk of the profit while providing inadequite cover for their civizens, i would say that your blind faith in the for-profit free market system is naive, especially when we are talking about peoples health.

then what is?
i think , gettign your teeth professionally cleaned, x-rays, and probably fillings.

I just signed up to a private health insurance fund, and because i wasn't insured before, i have a waiting period of 12 months to get my wisdom tooth out, which i need to do. It's classified under Major, while basic dental is only 2 months waiting.
