There were elders you goose and your criteria for statehood is absurd and impractical. I fully agree there has never been a society without a state by your definition because even the simplest of minds could see how impractical it is. There was no state in Australia pre colonization.

That's all well and good but people get cancer from all different sources and it can't always be helped.

Would you care if under a communist government everyone was unhappy and there was very prevalent suicide?
'Communist government' is kinda a contradiction in terms. Jus sayin

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot

How do you know this? What are you basing this on? Why should we believe you over millions of smokers who say they do enjoy it?

Is it not possible that although smokers do not get "high" they enjoy the ritual of smoking, and find it peaceful and relaxing?

I was not belittling emotion. If it came across that way, let me clear up now in no uncertain terms that I do not think emotion is unimportant.

My main point was not that using emotion is wrong, but that hypothetically constructing examples that assume people have 20-20 hindsight is wrong. I asked you a few pretty simple questions. Why do you find them so hard to answer?
They are suffering an addiction their judgement is impaired and that is why their word is worth nothing. I know this because I know the chemical makeup of a cigarette and I know the makeup of a human.

Was the purpose of saying what you did because you are genuinely curious about what I expect the the attitude of automobile accidents to be towards cars? I suspect it was not, Nothing you could say could convince me otherwise and that is why I did not answer. What you did try and establish is that preventing people from having to suffer extreme negative emotions some of wish can spur on suicidal tendencies is unimportant when stacked up against the intangible miracle of freedom.

How do you know from the chemical make up of something whether or not it results in enjoyment or not? I'm not denying addiction, but even if we take your contemptuous view of all smokers, even scientists have observed that certain pleasure centers of the brain are activated when people smoke. Although addiction may cause smokers to need to smoke to feel normal, that does not mean that they only feel normal when they are smoking and do not derive any additional pleasure from it. The moment when they light up induces a rush of endorphins and is a very pleasurable experience for most smokers.

The enjoyment also goes beyond the chemical make up of cigarettes. Many people just enjoy the ritual of smoking.

I did absolutely nothing of the sort. Stop strawmaning me and trying to derail the discussion because you can't back up what you say.

I did not even mention freedom implicitly or explicitly. My point was not about freedom, but about how we make our choices.

The point of those examples was that sometimes it is worth risking extremely negative consequences to achieve certain ends.

My motives for asking certain questions is irrelevant. You have wasted far more time avoiding answering the questions by attacking me and obfuscating the discussion than it would have taken to simply give a straightforward answer.

I don't get personal the only thing I have attacked is the insinuation that it is worth making people go through the trauma of watching a love one be consumed by lung cancer or brought down by a stroke in the name so long as we get to punch the air and scream "we have choices."

Yeah I know your views. If your logic is sound, you should have no trouble answering my few very simple questions about analogous situations.

You are strawmanning me again. I did not say it is so we have choices, I said very clearly: "the point of those examples was that sometimes it is worth risking extremely negative consequences to achieve certain ends."

Why should people have to go through the trauma of watching their loved ones die in pain because they were maimed in a car accident? Can we say that choosing the convenience of automobile transport over more expensive or time consuming options like public transport or living in the CBD is objectively wrong because it increase the likelihood of a disastrous outcome. Should cars therefore be banned. At the very least, should motorcycles (which the RTA estimates are 30 times more dangerous than cars) be banned?

That test is flawed, the more right wing phrases are given in a way which to agree with would be self-incriminating

There is certainly an argument for it but as cars and living in the CBD yield some pretty fair dinkum benefits it is less clear then taking away the ciggies.
