I've been thinking for a while now, how hard is it really to actually get into graduate med. Say if you do Biomed at Melb Uni how well do you need to do during those 3 years to actually get into med? If you don't get in.. what could u do with a degree in biomedicine?

Usually need a credit average for most grad med degrees. Then GMAT, then blah blah have a look at some of the other threads, the question has been asked before and there are a few good answers

You will need greater than 5.5-6 so just under or at Distinction Average if you want to do Med at Melbourne, plus sit GAMSAT, and an interview. So it is a long and winding path. If you don't get in you can try and sit umat and get into an undergrad course using your GPA only some uni's take graduates or students who have done some studies UWS, UNCLE, Utas, JCU, Bond, etc.
Other uni's have different requirements and are more around credit avg for grad med, umelb will be the hardest to get into because of there MD program. I suggest you look at the tabbed resources in this forum and check out www.medstudentsonline.com.au for undergrad www.pagingdr.proboards.com for grad med

bio med or medical science you can work for companies or hospitals as a pathology lab assistant technician, etc you will prob need to do hons and a phd if you want to do reserach in biomed, etc.

thanks guys! just wanted some more of your thoughts, i know biomed is supposed to be the 'preferred' course that leads to graduate medicine because it covers the requirements i think (biochem, anatomy and physiology) which are needed at some Uni's. Just looking ahead a little, if worst comes to worst and i don't get into graduate med, would that mean potentially doing research in a lab as a career :S

I have nutrition/dietetics at monash as a second preference, even though it doesn't cover all the subject requirements would it be better to consider doing this instead of biomed and then applying for graduate med, that way if i don't get in at least there's something to fall back on.

Wrong.
Wrong.
Wrong.
Wrong.

1 more time, just for emphasis.

Wrong.

there is NO preferred course to lead to graduate med. ANY degree will get you considered equally. do NOT under any circumstances choose biomed because you think it will give you a better chance of getting into med.

Choose a course that you LIKE and and will enjoy studying so that you can achieve the best possible grades in it. THAT is what will help you get a med interview.

Choose a course that will lead to a career that you will like, so that if you don't get into medicine, you have a backup plan.

I cannot agree more with DanielJW. Do something you are interested in - that way you maximise your ability to excel in your preferred degree and therefore, your chances of getting into med. While a biomed degree may give you a better background than other degrees, everyone who gets into med will be treated the same and they understand that students are from diverse backgrounds, so don't worry about how you will deal with the content in med at this point in time.

As I understand it, the GAMSAT tests all the scientific knowledge you're meant to know, so it doesn't matter what degree you do. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)
