aw. What'd you get for the School Cert? I didn't even try for my trials unless they were going to be counted in my assessment mark.

I'm doing standard because I don't feel I can critically analyse things to the degree thats needed in advance.

Standard English really doesn't scale down....

An 80 in standard contributes more than an 80 in advanced to your atar...according to atar/uai calculators..

it sure was my greatest contributor lol

Isn't the highest ATAR for someone doing standard english this year 99.45 or sumthing?

Pick advanced over standard anyday imo, too hard to get a band 6 in std english... there goes ur all rounder award already.

Actually, in the HSC English Syllabus and prescriptions, the standard english students do not study Shakespeare; they study four types of prescribed text, one each of:
- prose fiction
- drama
- poetry
- nonfiction or film or media or multimedia texts

Advanced English students must study five types, the extra type being Shakespearean drama.

Maybe it was in 2008 but I'm quite sure The Merchant of Venice was an option for a prescribed text for English (Standard) students for the Area of Study, or a module. I've heard of schools allocating Shakespearean texts to Standard English students.

I got 88% in the NSW SC English-literacy test in 2009 and the Assistant English Coordinator said to me, "Do Advanced, because if you can't do it James, who can?" I think I came fourth in English in the end. Anyway, my results were quite solid. But even though most of my class got Band sixes, the teacher still thinks I am a better student of English than most of them. :haha:

meh why not choose standard? it's pretty easy to get a band 5 in it so why bother going the extra mile. unless u really want 99.95 atar then i don't really see the point in doing advanced. most people say standard scales really bad but that's not really the case. it's just that getting a band 6 takes more effort. but if u are really a genius at eng then either way there's no stopping u from getting a band 6

If you're a genius at English you'd obviously be in love with the subject and therefore do Advanced English the course "for the English lover" as Standard is sadly lacking study of the greatest English literature/plays ever written, Shakespeare's Hamlet or Julius Caesar etc.

I love Shakespeare :D <3

Wasn't Merchant of Venice. Tempest or King Richard III was on the course for Standard students in 2008.

So why did you choose Standard English?
With all the stuff going around that Standard English aligns down terribly, what made you do Standard English?

I had to choose Standard English because I did badly in my School certificate, and as a result, I was forced to pick it.
That sucks, especially because the SC means nothing.
+1. My school makes everyone do Advanced. It's not even an option. Everyone is also encouraged to do extension by the English Department. The head teacher even spent a whole lesson when we were in Year 10 talking us into taking Extension lol.

Standard English really doesn't scale down....

An 80 in standard contributes more than an 80 in advanced to your atar...according to atar/uai calculators..

it sure was my greatest contributor lol
That's probably because there are proportionately less people getting 80 for Standard than Advanced so if you got 80 in Standard then you are ranked better amongst the Standard cohort.
