Hi guys I just need some info regarding a few elective units. Can anybody give me an idea of what these units are like (assessments, amount of work, if its worthwhile, etc.):

AHIS120 - last year this was AHST104
MHIS115 - this was HIST115
GMN104

Thanks.

I didnt do GMN104 but speaking from experiencing German Units @ Macquarie I can tell you that it will be a fair amount of work, requiring constant work (no...cramming doesnt do wonders for language study), usually an assessement once every 1-2 weeks and a grammar test also once every few weeks.

For the German there is usually an end of semester exam, consisting of a reading, writing and grammar section worth between about 40 and 60 % and generally need to pass the exam to pass the course.

Whilst it seems like a lot of work learning a language is really a valuable tool and I highly reccomend learning at least one!

100lvl AHIS units are generally pretty easy, theres a ton of reading and the major assignments require a decent amount of research but as long as you stay on top of it its not hard to do quite well. I've heard from quite a few people that Antiquity's Heirs is one of the best first year AHIS units on offer, i'll be taking it as well.

Yeah I was thinking about doing it so I can have at least have some knowledge of another language. Plus I thought maybe it won't be too difficult because I can speak Turkish and the languages are some what similar.

It just seems really intersting but i'm tossing up between AHIS120 and MHIS115, they both seem like units I would actually enjoy.

hist115 wasn't great imo. the assignments did not relate to lecture notes (at first it seems like they will, but once you get into it, you'll find they don't), and only related to like 2-5 pages in the textbook, so they required a fair bit of figuring out what the hell it's asking before even starting to research. the lecturers were nice, but really anal about being on time to lectures and they turned off ilecture for us. it was interesting talking about how the world and human civilisation have developed though. maybe go to both opening lectures for the units your tossing up between and see which is more interesting.

I've done GMN104 - lots of work but good teachers and classes. Felt like I'd actually used my brain a bit by the end :)

So lots of work meaning a lot of assignments? Also did you do the unit with no prior knowledge of German and if so, how difficult was the unit?
