I'm aiming for an ATAR of at least 85. I entered my subjects into the matrix calculator doing uai to hsc marks, and to get 85 my hsc marks need to be around 80 and my percentile top 40 - 50%. BTW my subjects are in my sig.

My yr11 final ranks were all average (except for english above average). I go to a top 200 school. If my ranks stayed the same (going to try and improve them though) would i be looking at an ATAR of 85? or something else? What ranks would ineed to be getting to get 95?(i know that will take a lot more work than i'm currently doing)

if there were 100 kids in a top 200 school, I'd expect 20 of them to get above 85.
for above 95, I think maybe top 10.

Not really, my school ranked 358 this year about 10 got over 95, 20 over 90 and about 35 over 85.

I use, for my ATAR predictions, the UAC tables - it's a new method I found.

ATAR Aim? For you, 85.

Using Table A8, 85 ATAR is an aggregate of 340.0.

Subjects are:
Advanced English, 2U Maths, Legal Studies, Economics, Chemistry

Now, the average student will get a P50, or a percentile of 50. We'll use this to determine the average scaled marks:

Advanced English - 32.1 --> 64.2/100
Mathematics - 31.4 --> 62.8/100
Legal Studies - 26.2 --> 52.4/100
Economics - 32.5 --> 65.0/100
Chemistry - 33.0 --> 66.0/100
Total Aggregate: 310.4/500

Predicted ATAR: 79-ish.

Now NOTE: That is if you go average in all your subjects, as in do enough to beat half the candidature, a P50. Now if you go to a top 200 school, you would probably be inching toward the P75 range even if you are 'average' there. Thereby, your predicted ATAR would be:

Advanced English - 37.8 --> 75.6/100
Mathematics - 37.7 --> 75.4/100
Legal Studies - 33.8 --> 67.6/100
Economics - 38.4 --> 76.8/100
Chemistry - 38.5 --> 77.0/100
Total Aggregate: 372.4/500

ATAR would be around 90.50.

yeah i need to pick up my legal marks, but was hoping my above average english might help with that. I found if I was 80th percentile at legal it would have a similar scaled mark to my other subjects.

Ahh this is very interesting, i knew that would have some bearing but if what you're saying is accurate or close to, that's great news; but i'll still be hitting the books just to be safe and get the best mark possile for me.

Thanks for such a detailed reply shadowdude and everyone else's replys as well.

shadowdude your disturbing interest in estimations is frightening...

neways stop trying to work out what your predicted is by looking at yr 11. Yr 11 to Yr 12 is like going from a kiddy pool to a diving pool. its a whole new thing. everyone studies much harder and some people will shock with amazing marks from no where while some will flatten out and just achieve avg and some will go from good to bad. This changes your ranks and internal marks and everything. your school sets the tests so you cannot work out what marks you need because everything is relative. you cannot work out whether being ranked 20th is good because sometimes your grade is smart while the last 5 years were dumb.

in summary, its lame to try to spend so much time with this. Spend your time having fun in the holidays and then start studying when school starts. You can look for predictions AFTER trial marks. Any attempt before is just stupid.

and avg atar for the state is around 72.

Use Sam or Matrix to work out what marks you'll need to get your 95. Work out what the best combo of marks would be best (or most realistic) for you :)

Then go to your teachers and ask 'em around what rank you'll need to get that mark/band.

Whatever rank they say, aim to beat it by at least 2 ranks just to be safe.

Gluck :)

Yeah the time you spend predicting could be used for studying, which would innevitably carry your prediction higher......................

You didn't factor in how many students your school has...If 500 students went to the top 200 school you'd have to double his numbers.

I just like looking at tables and stuff... maybe Actuary could be a nice job for me. No one knows what they are, you have an aura of mystery surrounding you.

"Who's he?" "Oh, him? He is... The Actuary." *cue awesome music*

Also, I edit my previous prediction, I found Table A8 could do wonders =P.

Predicted ATAR for those marks is 79.00
