Apparently this band is deathcore (wikipedia) but I don't really hear the core part. But its a good song. Sounds a bit like cannibal corpse. So I suspect this song is more death metal.

The core part generally comes from the inclusion of breakdowns, which more or less played a significant role in hardcore music, but other than that yeah... it's metal.

Deathcore doesn't really get any respect from me. I was going to call it watered down metal, but in fact it's actually been spruced up enough to become marginally fashionable. You only have to take a look at the edgy, yet-fashionable, band members with their carefully straightened hair and their horde of adolescent fans to know that something is awry. I mean, this is metal we're talking about here, sure we all wear black shirts and grow our hair and be generally seedy but surely we don't care this much about appearances.

That's not to say that my opinion is totally based on appearances, I find the music really bland too. It's all recycled diminished riffs, hints of, or slabs of, atonalism, br00tal vocals and epic breakdownz! I mean what happened to guitar solos, brooding interludes, eerie bridges, clean (un-autotuned) vocals, changing up time signatures, interesting rhythms and shit like that. I mean if you're going to recycle stuff atleast improve on it or put your own kind of flavour on it, but no, the kids won't get it.

Listen to like the first 15 seconds of these two videos of a deathcore band and tell me that they're not extremely similar. I guess it might have been alright if both the songs weren't released as singles...

YouTube - BMTH Bring me the Horizon - 'Pray for Plagues' Official Video
YouTube - BMTH Bring me the Horizon - For Stevie Wonder's Eyes Only (Braille) Live Video

All this being said, they are tailoring themselves and their music to a specific audience; an audience who follows them, buys merchandise, goes to shows and who, at the end of the day, pays them. So from a business point of view they're doing all the right the things, but from a musicians point of view whether they're doing the right thing by confining themselves to a rubric I guess depends on the members.

But isn't that what metal is about? Not giving two shits about getting paid or doing business and making music that pleases you? Then again that's what bands like Suicide Silence and BMTH may very well be doing, they just hit a niche and got lucky.

Still, I guess I won't rule all Deathcore out altogether... that song by Thy Art is Murder about killing prostitutes because they're dirty is pretty enjoyable.

I'll leave you with Death;

But there's so much metal infused -core, or -core infused metal, it's hard not to like one without liking the other!

I'm with Omie Jay on this one...

I'm sorry Arctopus, but all the -core's get outdone for speed and technicality by Black Metal and get outdown for riffage by Death Metal...

I can digest a bit of Killswitch Engage... but only a couple of songs, sometimes only one at a time... and My Curse is probably the perfect description of metalcore's entire sound.

Deathcore is as Arctopus put it, just an attempt to be brutal and dissonant...

Being Atonal and dissonant is easy as all hell... being original while doing it... another story.

the red chord?

that band has some okay songs, but i like beyond the sixth seal better (it has mike gunface mckenzie from red chord, also i probalby like it more because its melodic dm, with a rock n roll twist)

(also gunface sounds like a fucking monster, just sayin)

Yeah, but I'm leaning more towards the side of hardcore punk that melds with metal. Bands like Converge who keep that really strong and thrashy punk vibe to them. I wasn't really referring to metalcore bands like As I Lay Dying or Killswitch or whoever...

whatever nile is/
I'd say Technical Death.

I'm not a huge fan of Deathcore. I prefer wither straight Death, or Grindcore over it. All Shall Perish are alright though. And I've been meaning to get around to getting more Alice Through The Windshield Glass.

Also, if Brutal Truth, and Fuck I'm Dead, count; then put them in as well.

tbh i dont really care much about speed or technicality. I mean... it can be awesome (eg Nile and behemoth's drummer and their guitar solo's), but i mainly go for the music.

Nile have some of the weirdest songs, like.. i dont get their beat/time signature/whatever, and some songs are really slow, yet the double bass is going faster than ever, but i still like them lots (also it's the first death metal i heard).

Regular death metal bands like cannibal corpse are boring to me, musically they do nothing but bland riffs.
Other bands, like behemoth, god dethroned, actually have some form of tune that i can get stuck in my head, or hum or whistle along to, and this is especially the case with any melodic dm band, which is probably why mdm is my favourite subgenre.

Insomnium dont play particularly fast or technically, but i really love their music (and they're lyrics are fairly amazing too). Same with Nightrage. And Amon Amarth (though they're much heavier too, which is cool in it's own way).
My favourite Ensiferum songs are Token of Time and Eternal Wait (from their self titled album), they're not particularly fast or technical.

I got a Dragonforce album lately (for that fire and flames song), i find the singing and lyrics lame, but i love the music. First 2 songs on that album are awesome imo.

edit: re: deathcore, i've checked out a few bands, iktpq, black dahlia murder, and i really dont like it, lol.

It's a shame TTF&T is on Inhuman Rampage. Most people miss out on Sonic Firestorm, which is easily the better album IMO
