as a chinese international student, i saw this thread a couple of days ago and decided to remain silent as long as the criticism on internationals was not 'crossing the line'...However not surprisingly ppl started to blame us for everything and even explicitly showed ur hatred and discrimination of international students. Now I would like to make it clear to you, Mr Not-Vietnamese, as well as all other proud locals and Anglo-saxon internationals,
1) we ARE able to speak english.

2) like it or not, we are entitled to speak our own language as long as we are not in class.

3) I agree that it is very inappropriate to talk to ppl in chinese without asking if u speak the language. But maybe they thought u r chinese. Every time i go to Korean stores or Japanese hair salons, ppl talk to me in Korean and Japanese as well, and i've never been pissed off.
First of all.. It's Ms not Mr... I think its pretty clear coz i have Gender: Female under my nick name ;)

Look my grandparents are chinese so I'm *technically* still chinese. Is it still discrimination then if Im bagging people from my own background? :p I am not saying that ALL chinese students cant speak english... I just had a LOT of bad experience with them. A friend of mine is chinese and she speak english well. Used to work with this guy and he speak awesome english. Not saying that all chinese students cant speak english. But most seriously need to start work more on their english skills.

2) like it or not, we are entitled to speak our own language as long as we are not in class.

Is it appropriate to speak with your friends in your own language in level 3/4 QUIET reading spaces ? :)

My BF is korean(aussie) and he looks like *obvious* korean and people still talk chinese to him. He just replied with random ching chong lOL maybe i should do that next time. Im never pissed off when they do that, the thing is, after I said I cant speak chinese politely they look down at me like 'WTF you look chinese and you cant speak our language?' :( and then that change of attitude.. they sound friendly when they speak in chinese (one guy asked me why I dont go to tute last week. I tell him i dont understand, he translates, had a nice convo, then he go) and guess what when I genuinely try to be friendly to them and u know, make new friends, they IGNORE me as if Im a complete stranger. WTF. So because I cant speak your language I cant be your friend??? =fail!

More than half of international students in SIBT & MQ is Chinese students (agree?)
==> Chinese students have the bigger chance of being involved in stuffs like this! <=== that's why people keep saying chinese this chinese that (it's not fair!)

In fact, there are many nice, smart, good-looking chinese students out there. To whom had horrifying experiences with Chinese speakers, u just have bad luck! :D

By any chance do I know you?
Yeah the same thing happened so many times to me. Many people just came and tried to speak mandarin to me or they sometimes also asked me like "can u speak chinese?" I know I look so chinese (I am but just wasnt born in china) but seriously is there anything wrong starting speaking in English and after you know that person, you start communicating in Chinese instead of just coming out of nowhere and started a conversation with unfamiliar language?

And yes I have so many nerdy Vietnamese friends. One even got scholarship @mq

most indonesian students in aust usually come from chinese background (most of them have great grandparents who are chinese.. this is why some of them can speak chinese some of them can't... well I obviously cant) but I reckon its pretty easy to differentiate indo/chinese with chinese mainland people because most of us are more tanned (typical south east asian) and the way indo ppl dress is a lot different with chinese mainland people.

@ silver sakura... OH I WISH I am smaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttttt look at me i have exam tomorrow and yet I am still here...

Cuz she mentioned that she had been mistaken 4 Chinese and she's not VN. So the others are Malay, Sing (obviously not 2) so I assumed she was Indo. I know like Malay there are many ethnics in Indo and the Chinese origins (besides the local origins) ones are pretty heap rite?

I agree with frauelize that if u observe carefully u can c the differences but sometimes it's not an easy job. I've quite often been mistaken 4 Chinese by my country(wo)men lmao.

Tajid: The one is Phuong or Moon (both female) rite? Many nerdies in MQ, from China, India, Korean, VN, Indo...

Cuz she said she's a SEA one and not Vietnamese. If not I would have thought of Vietnamese or Korean.

Almost everyone is on facebook. Wherever I go, as long as there are people using the internet (even the traditional markets, yes)----people use facebook. This shows how humans are essentially, lonely.

People go on facebook a lot to feel less alone.

Well they might do so bcos they have like 1 hr gap between classes and dont really know anything else to do.
i have 3 hours gaps and i find something to do. if nobody was waiting for a computer then thats fine but if there is a massive line and people are on facebook then thats just plain rude.
