So I've always wanted to get into some decent photography. I'm a complete noob on the technical side of it.

What's a decent starting camera?

I can only speak for canon and nikon's. the canon eos 1100D (replaces the 1000D) or nikon D3100 are good starting cameras.
I've also heard good things about pentax's

budget doesn't really matter within reason. i'll just save till i have enough. i'd rather buy something decent for a bit more, rather than something shit, which is cheap.

Actually, that'd be the Canon 550D, it's got the same size sensor as the 7D and 60D

if budget is not the matter, why not go for canon 5D II , this camera offers amazing image quality, on top of that, this will never (hopefully) limit your room for future improvement like those entry level dslr does. if you don't like the size of it, you might consider leica M9, draw attention from EVERYONE pass by you !


for more realistic, i suggest you go for canon 550d, in terms of video function it outplays nikon d3100, d90 is too old, if you really like capturing video, you might like to look at canon 600d or nikon d5100 for the vari-angle screen. pentax K-r and the recent sony a33/a55 are also good options. but canon and nikon have huge amount of lenses available while pentax and sony have to rely on third companies (sigma/tamron) . i personally like sony very much since they always make good looking camera

if you raise your budget higher, you can go for canon 60d or nikon d7000, 60d better at video d7000 better at image

lens is more important than the body

Well I've been a photographer [just for my online photog blog, dA & school] for about a year now, but only recently did I actually get a professional DSLR.
I have a Nikon D7000.
Basically I just started out using a coolpix p500.

I just ordered a Canon EOS 1100D the other day, picking it up tomorrow. Was $1099 in a twin kit, comes with 18-55mm and 55-250mm IS lenses. Lets be noobs together

such a shame that lenses are so fucking expensive though. I want to take pictures where the subject is sharply focused and the background is blurry but apparently this requires a $2000 lens to achieve? :/

Aperture priority mode is your friend. Although a (50mm) prime lens would really help, they are only a few hundred.

hells yeah found a way to achieve this look with my 55-250mm lens: telephoto zoom, lowest f stop, bam. only problem is I obviously have to stand very far away from the subject (better for taking photos of people). Otherwise i can use my 18-55mm lens zoomed all the way with the lowest f-stop, but i have to get close as possible to the subject (better for small subjects).

Here's some pics i took. They arent very good because i've never touched a DSLR before today, but they'll do. Some are a bit dark because my room is dark and i dont like using flash -_-

Canon 550D-600D its got the features you'd need to learn about photography very beginner friendly, but unlike the 1100D or D3100 it will not limit what you can do when you become a more experienced photographer/videographer.
