These aren't simply personal life though, in many cases they are there for all to see and the ramifications of what they write can be significant. Twitter in particular is essentially an added dimension of the media as much as it is social networking.

I agree in a sense, but I think the emphasis within any school should be on education. Even if we accept the fact that any expression through these mediums isn't private, teachers still have no authority to begin dictacting the do's and dont's of a students life. They are ultimately there to educate. The fact that they are permitted to use disciplinary action is nothing more than a tool used to maintain order in the classroom.

If on the other hand there are things like personal attacks and defamation happening within the school through the likes of Facebook and Twitter or whatever, then I think the school has sufficient grounds to get involved.

I can understand that schools should be permitted to monitor all incoming and outgoing internet traffic from THEIR own web server (Local Area Network). But other than that they should stick within their bounds, and not go 'hacking' their way onto student accounts on the internet.

It's kinda freaky and a breach of privacy when schools can see what students are doing online when they are at HOME using their own ISP and IP address. Schools should NOT be allowed to intercept individual home IP addresses of students, unless of course the police are involved and its a serious case. e.g. murder, serious cyber bullying etc.

And posing as someone other than yourself on the internet is against the law. But it wouldn't surprise me if some school deputy, created a fb profile and put up a fake hot chick picture just so all the guys of a school could add the profile, so the school can monitor comments etc. It's pretty easy to get away with things on the internet, but when people start investigating a cyber problem, it is rapidly traced back to the person who started it, by making relationship links between different sets of data.

Privacy is relative new, only introduced back in 1988. And ISPs today keep a log of all the websites (URLs) you visit for up to 2 years. Just to make sure that if their is a serious case, they can heck their back log of URLs visited by a specific geographical IP address.

And yeah, we think our principal made this facebook account to stalk us, cos the person had like a few hundred students from my school as friends and no other friends, no pictures, no other information.

Personally I believe it is alright if students and teachers are friends on facebook. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be a bad thing (A Teacher/student can always not friend them)

I didn't provide an excuse/argument I just made a conclusion in that post. Either way you're missing the point completely and your post is very anti-freedom (why is this). A school is an educational institution. It is supposed to provide an education in return for a fee. It is not a correctional facility and it has absolutely zero business putting a microscope on the lives of students. Why stop with schools? Lets say it's okay for the local butcher to stalk people on facebook and attempt to serve out punishment if somebody does not conform to their moral standards.
