Hey guys,

I'm new here! Seems like a sweet place to get some help, cool little community..
So here it is.

I want to know whether or not I would be able to handle Mathematics (Advanced). I 'm currently in Year 10, in the the top class on the 5.2 level. I would say that i'm going pretty well, B+ student? :p And yeah, would I be able to handle it? I want to know how big the workload is and how much study would I be expecting to do. I know Year 11 is a step up, but I think I'm ready to give up gaming and get COMMITTED to study as I know it's now or never..

Thanks in advance! :)

Yes definitely. The workload isn't much and you should probably aim for about 30mins a day of study at this point in time.

Consider taking up Extension One since you seem very capable.

M8, don't waste your time doing general if you even think you're capable of doing 2unit.

It's not that difficult if you just go to class and do your work. Don't stop pestering your teacher until you understand the topic. That's what they're getting paid for- to help you! No talk at you.

Anyway, yeah, it's not that bad. I did chem, bio, 3unit, english adv, music 1 and religion (by force) and there was nothing really overwhelming about the whole process. I dropped extension for year 12 and the mathematics in year 12 is piss easy. I forget what was in year 11, but year 12 is probability, some sliiiightly more complex financial maths, exponential growth and decay, calculus (not EVEN as scary as it sounds) and some other stuff, i forget. Have a look at the syllabus and chat to people the year above you at school, and talk to your maths coordinator.

You'll be right!

Word, extension wasn't even that hard... I dropped it because I was lazy. If you've got yo' head in the game, you'll smash it.
Even if you drop it for year 12, i found it really helped with 2 unit. dunno why, it just did.

You will have to do some catching up with 5.3 work. Jumping from 5.2 -2 unit is a really big step. I remember in our year 11, a third of the 2unit course dropped out in the first term, including all the guys who came up from 5.2.

Oh sweeeeet. Definitely doing it then! :) Thank you both for the quick replies, I gotta pick my subjects before tomorrow.
A lot of my friends say that it's over-the-top, I don't believe them. I know I'm capable!

Alright, much love. <3

Would that be done on my part?

Not really, you're basically re/taught 5.2-3 in the first few weeks of 2U anyway.

True, but you can fall behind. Remember for a lot of you guys maths comes easy, however for someone doing 5.2 maths, it might be a struggle. Still give it a go though, you can always drop to general if you dont like it/struggle.

Yes, you should pick Mathematics. If it's too hard, then drop it.

I would say go as high as you can go - it really helps for maths. Try out 3 unit as well! The workload is a bit higher, but it will make 2U exams a lot easier.

So I'm back from an interview for a Senior Campus and talked about my subject selections, and the teacher told me that she doesn't think I would be able to handle this. She simply judged me from my Year 9 Yearly report.. I think it's BS. What do you guys think? I'm still going with 2U Maths but I had to drop Engineering as she strongly felt it was too much..

Thanks

How many units are you taking? You should go ahead with it - if you can't handle it, there's always the option of dropping it later. Year 9 means nothing tbh, and if you're really determined you can start catching up / preparing in the summer holidays.

Absolute BS, year 9 reports are irrelevant.

So I've taken a quick look at the syllabus, one question. Would they be teaching me as if I haven't seen of any of these concepts beforehand? Or would they be expecting me to have some good background knowledge on whatever the topic? And also, what are some good textbooks to read over to catch up/get a headstart?

Edit: Thats a bad question^. Ofcourse they wouldn't expect me to, it's the reason we go to school -.- I just want to know if they would be explaining things in a different 'language', i guess you could say. Like mathematic terms which i might not have heard of before..

Thanks :)

Do whatever you feel is right. Honestly, it's true that teachers may have some good indication about your capabilities, but overall they don't know you very well. You know you can put in the effort, so just pick it up, give it a go. It doesn't hurt.

You should do 2U(Advanced) as a minimum. If later you prove incapable of handling it you still have a chance to drop to General. Having 2U(Adv) and 3U opens up so many more options for uni.

Though not absolutely essential, enoilgam's suggestion is a good one: cover 5.3 work this yr as well. Helps you cope with 2U. If you need help get an experienced 1-on-1 tutor for this.

2u makes you think more. It's more rewarding, knowing that you can graph an entire trig question from scratch.

The formulas are easy to remember, they become second nature as you get used to them.

USE YEAR 11 to understand the basic concepts, they are so important to year 12 topics. I cannot stress this enough. Especially basic algebra skills. Many people will fall down on a 7 mark question, all because they couldn't factorise a simple polynomial in part (i). Believe me, I've been through it. Just do well through the 2 years and you should have no problems. Practice consistently (easier said than done - depending on available time and motivation). If you're finding it difficult, consider getting a tutor or dropping to general maths.

And to the guy that said it opens up more options at uni. That is not entirely true. There are always 2 week bridging courses they you can do in your summer holidays leading up to your 1st year of uni. Having said that. 2 years worth of experience is better than 2 weeks worth of rush content and you are more likely to see if 2 unit or above maths is for you or not, and whether you desire a career pathway in a technical industry.

Yeah, many thanks for the advice. My parents are going to find me a 1-on-1 tutor to help me next year.
