What happens in the case of illness and misadventure?

How is my mark estimated? I managed to complete one essay out of the three required in English Paper 2 (advanced).

What will my mark consist of?

I still did English Paper 1 and they said that they would mark the work that I completed for English Paper 2.

Does anyone have personal experiences of estimations in the HSC?

Thanks to people who respond

If it is agreed that you are sick, then your exam mark will either your total mark on both papers, or your internal assessment, whichever is higher.

Even if you were only sick for one paper, the decision is made across both papers. That is, it is as though English was one examination and you were sick for part of it.

Oh okay.. so if my illness and misadventure form is passed then my entire English mark will be estimated, and they won't consider the things that I wrong in EITHER paper 1 or paper 2?
And by assessment mark, is that the moderated assessment mark, based upon the performance of my cohort and my respective rank - or my actual assessment mark that my school submitted based on my internal marks.

Thank you for your help

Doesn't this system hurt students who improve towards the end of the HSC and help those who have been going well and just can't be bothered to study? I mean, if someone was coming first, they could drink like 500ml of bleach and be sick for the exam right, and just get the largest estimated external.

Correct. If IM is accepted then nothing from either exam will count (if total is lower than asst). And by asst I mean moderated asst, based on cohort exam marks and your rank.

Yes, which is why you should always work hard all year, you never know when you might get sick.

Oh wow. Thank you once again...
I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing.
I'm ranked 4/20 in Eng Adv, but I'm not too sure how my cohort would have performed. I'm hoping for 85+ in Adv Eng, but my school rank is 250+. :S

btw BOSBOY, are you a 2011 Hsc'er aswell or a past graduate?

1st rank will be pinned with the highest exam mark, and last rank will be pinned with the lowest exam mark. Essentially, when all this gets moderated as per your school assessment marks, you will receive the 4th highest moderated assessment mark which will also be your exam mark and thus HSC mark. So really, you'd want your cohort to ace it, otherwise you may have potentially gotten a higher mark on your own efforts in the HSC.

If the student who was ranked 1st is given an illness misadventure appeal they will NOT get the top exam mark but they will take the top exam mark and consider how big the gap was between first and second and then award an assessment mark e.g. student ranked 1st was ahead of student ranked 2nd by 5 marks and the top exam mark was 89 then the first ranked person, who has been awarded an illness/misadventure application, will get a mark of 93 or so.

If, of course, it if the person ranked 2nd who is successful in their illness/misadventure application they will be awarded a mark commensurate with the difference between them and the first ranked mark.

If manic100 gets a higher mark on their own effort they will keep it.

So how would this apply to my 4th rank? Will I not necessarily receive the 4th highest assessment mark as my exam mark?

Yes, I know, but if he were to not sit an exam at all, then that would be the case. Effectively, if it is a successful misadventure appeal, sitting the exam or not sitting the exam should result in the exact same result. But the point being, he only complete 1 part, so I doubt that would be a top 4 mark (unless it was genuinely bad).

I find it hard to believe.. that my first two days of the HSC now account for nothing, for missing one section of the exam, if my IM is successful - which it should be, I already received a doctor's certificate and all.

You will be taken out of the moderation process completely so the cohort will be dealt with as if there was one less student than there actually is. Then when everyone else is dealt with in your cohort they will look at your rank from the school and the gap between you and both 3rd and 5th and slot you in accordingly e.g. if you were one mark behind 3rd and 3 marks ahead of 5th you will remain in that position - for both the exam and for the moderation process.

Can someone please clarify this situation for me:
I have a medical certificate for paper 2. I feel I did well in it, but my internal rank is high, probably higher than external mark i will get (I am 13th in 4th ranked school)
Is it in my advantage to apply for illness for paper 2?

depending on the seriousness of your illness/misadventure it will be assessed and if you deserve to be reimbursed for your marks you possibly would of got if you had been well...

basically if they accept your excuse then they will check your assessment marks compared to your exam mark and give you the higher mark..

If they reject it you will just receive the mark you got for the exam... if you don't attempt the paper at all you will receive a zero for that section and most probably fail that topic.

for your exam paper i am guessing your assessment mark will be higher than your attempt at the exam so they will pick the higher of the two.

you should always attempt an exam even if your illness will hinder your performance.. But if you are lying on your death bed im pretty sure BOS will make an exception for you :)
