Dissolved Oxygen (DO) is the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water system. It is measured in ppm as the natural waterways and systems have approximately 8 ppm. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), is the measure of the how much of the DO is used by the organisms and bacteria present in the water system. The BOD of natural water system is about 4 ppm. The importance of DO is significant as it supports the aquatic life within the system, if the amount of DO is to low then the life will begin to die and cause bacteria to evolve to decompose the dead matter and this will further use the DO. Therefore it is important to monitor the amount of DO in the water and also the BOD so it will not deplet the oxygen levels to low and cause the system to become unhealthy and unsupportable to life.
