qantas should bring in some poor starving aborigines to work for 80% of whatever the original salary was

then the extreme left (unions and their sympathisers) would be so confused whether it was good or bad their heads would explode
110% of original salary

abos have an extremely acute visual memory and high capacity for spatial perceptions

maybe theyd actually make good airline pilots (doubt it)

But the low cost of living is largely brought on by the low standard of living.
and the low standard of living is due to the fact they they are developing countries (we aren't talking about singapore anymore).

long term economic growth depends on two factors a.increase in labour productivity and b. increase in the number of people employed. the main reason why wages are so low in developing countries is that the average labour productivity in those countries aren't as high. so what they lack in productivity they make up for in low wages. that is their comparative advantage. you take away that comparative advantage and they would be unable to compete with the developed world. now growth in productivity can only come about through investment in education, training and capital. and investments in those areas would only seem attractive if the future economic prospect is good. but if the average wage for the average worker is the same in developing nations and productivity is lower, then why would people invest there? why deal with various third world issues such as corruption, political instability and pollution when you can just invest in the developed world? the only way for those nations to grow is through an increase in population and hence the number of people employed. however that brings with it a host of other issues.

by demanding that workers in the developing world be paid the same amount as workers in the developed world, you are in essence condemning them to overpopulation. furthermore, determination of a 'reasonable wage' isn't as clear cut as a simple arithmetic equality. you'd have to take into account purchasing power parity and various other factors. for instance, suppose that an average worker in country A is paid $A3000 and his counterpart in country B is paid $B9000 for the same job. Now on the surface, it might look as if worker A is being 'exploited'. But what if I were to tell you that $A and $B have similar purchasing power? that is $A1 buys the same good in A as $B2.8 in B? now it doesn't look like worker A is being 'exploited' now does it?

Some jobs are more important though. A brain surgeon is more important than a newspaper delivery man for example.
