Year: 12 | Subject: English Advanced Task 2 | Due date: Monday 2 April, 2012
Topic: Belonging (view/represent) | Weighting: 25%
Description of the Task:

Part 1 — Written Response (10 marks)

Explain and evaluate how the concept of belonging has been conveyed through the representations of people, ideas and events in the following THREE texts:
• Your Prescribe Text – Romulus My Father
• Australian Government citizenship web page (including ‘Our common bond’ clips)
http://www.citizenship.gov.au/learn/cit_test/
• ONE related text of your own choosing
Required length: 800-900 words (essay).
You will have the opportunity to view the web page during class (1 period) and may choose to examine it further.

Part 2 - Visual Representation (10 marks)

‘The concept of belonging is conveyed through the representations of people, ideas and events’
a) Create a visual representation, for a group of senior High School students, to show how the above statement is presented in the THREE texts used in Part 1. You should consider the connections between texts as well as your own experiences.
The visual representation can be in the form of:
• Art work
• PowerPoint
• Collage
• Short film (3 – 4 mins)
• Comic
• Performance (create a persona who expresses aspects of belonging in a short 3-4 minute scripted or unscripted performance)
b) Explain how you have used visual techniques to communicate the main ideas in your representation.
Required length: 200-250 words

Part 3 – Reflection (5 marks)

To what extend has the use of a range of processes and technologies helped you to investigate and organise information about the concept belonging, and to understand relationships amongst texts?
Required length: 200 – 250 words

My main related text for Belonging is Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta (SBS) http://www.sbs.com.au/shows/onceuponatimeincabramatta and focusing on the experience of new arrivals to Australia.
