Well done! What division do you think you will be going into and why did you decide EY was the right place to go? :)
As far as I've been told, they expose you to a few divisions within tax to give you a feel, and then you later "specialise" in one. This was one deciding factor for me since I wasn't particularly excited about how PwC's interview was for a specific division...

My other option for tax would've been PwC - had my interview yesterday, no contact yet so I'm assuming I didn't get it - but I'm starting to think EY would've been the better choice for me. I know you're trying to make the same decision, and I'm not sure if I can provide any concrete advice for you to make that decision, but in the end it's all about where you think you'll fit in best. PwC pays more from what I've heard, however expects higher performance from its employees. EY is more laid back, and as per above I like how they give you a broader exposure at the start of your cadetship. Both companies are about on-par in terms of flexibility from my conversations with their staff.

EDIT: Just thought I should quickly mention I also declined an offer for KPMG Audit as I was really looking for a tax position, my connections at KPMG seem to say their Audit division is generally of lower calibre than PwC/EY.

No, unfortunately I was at my PwC interview :p Was there any useful information presented?
Ahha not really.
It was just good to meet everyone that got offers an to talk to the people that were there.
Including you I think there are 8 of us going into tax?

Yeah I pretty much have the same feelings in terms of flexibility as well as expectations, one of the partners at EY was good enough to contact me today actually to see how I was going regarding making a decision as well as ask if i had any preference for a particular field. I think this pretty much sums up the firm as it is a very "people first" culture who strongly looks after their employees. After this I think I am leaning slightly to the EY side as looking back I think that is where i felt most comfortable, appreciate your insight anyway!

Just a caveat, Whirlpool isn't exactly the best source of information. There is a LOT of hearsay on there which even I can't be bothered to trawl through. That thread also is quite old and a lot has changed between then and now in terms of how each firm positions itself in the various service offerings.

It's nice to hear a partner in particular went to the effort to call and discuss you with this.

You also say you felt most comfortable there.

I assure you, don't choose somewhere purely for prestige or anything like that. The atmosphere you're working in is essential. You will succeed so much more if you are happy in the environment your in.

No offence to any of you who happen to be in insolvency or audit, but i really really really hate it :p
I just love the fact my mother has completely ignored this because shes my mum :lol:

Yeah i am beginning to understand that, my only concern now is whether Private Client Services would be as transferable as Specialist Tax and what the room for movement is if i find one or the other not particularly appealing after my cadetship.

Also, say i did do Private Client Services and decided to come back as a consultant do you guys think that means that is most likely where i would stay, or could i move sideways into another division without starting at a graduate level again?

I'm aware of that haha, I did mention before I linked that the WP thread may not be particularly reliable, but it does offer a few interesting insights.

At this stage i think the big 4 have done their thing, but the mid tiers are probably still going through the motions of recruiting.

But I think a few firms don't do their application process til September? Grant Thornton is one of those from memory.

ohh okk thanks~ one more question, is there such thing where u get rejected from a firm but then later on they suddenly call u for a interview? cozz for a engineering cadet thats what happen so yea!

Big 4 has been finalised basically.

There are still mid-tier and smaller firms which haven't yet advertised, and may not until the closer to the September holidays and Tambam said.

My old firm has yet to advertise (I think they'll need to look for quite a few this year unfortunately) and when my brother applied for his cadetship it wasn't until August.

You also find that after the HSC when results are released, more positions will open up in mid tier firms. You usually get a few people who exceeded their expectations or didnt meet them at all that no longer want/can undertake a cadetship.

Alternatively, you can always apply as a first year cadet next year too! A lot of the firms accept either school leaver applications or people who will have finished 1 year of uni :)

Grant Thornton has already given interviews & offers.

This happened to my friend last year.
I think what happens is that the mid tier firms don't have the capacity to conduct many interviews, and of the few candidates they do consider, many of them receive numerous offers and have preference for the big 4.
Although I wouldn't put too much hope in this happening, the opportunity is still there.
