Hi people!!

i'm currently in the process of selecting subjects for y11~y12.
Currently I'm thinking of..

1. English - ESL (I came Australia at this year)
2. Math ext 1
3. photography (non-atar 1unit course - for making 12 units : i have to drop this subject in year12)
4. Business OR Economic
5. Design Technology(home economic) OR Visual Art
6. Japanese continuer
7. TAFE Tvet Financial Service (Accounting)

i have total 14 units for year11, but after 4weeks of term1 in year11, I can drop either TAFE accounting course or one 2 units school subject.
So after 4 weeks, i will drop 'Business OR Economic' or japanese if i like to do accounting TAFE course, so that i can do 12 units in year11 with one major work subject(DT or Visual art) and TAFE accounting course.

And at first I wanted to do 'Graphic designer' in the future but i was worrying about salary/stability of the job..
So i'm also thinking about 'Accountant' (or other kinds of job that i can choose after i get bachelor's degree of accounting)

a) Visual Art VS Design Technology (home eco)
- actually i do love hand drawing rather than using computer software, so i wanted to do visual art at first but worried about theory part....I want to do visual art if the essay(written exam) part is not that hard. (cuz i would have no idea when i hav to write about essay of random plate/topic that i've never seen.

b) Can i get ATAR of 95+ with those subjects? Currently, I'm aiming for sydney university(not sure yet).

c) Is there anyone who knows well about TAFE accounting subject? I want to try this cause i can drop it anyway after 4 weeks if i find it is useless. Is it hard to get ATAR mark? Is it useful? (my friend who wants to be an accountant asked to our commerce teacher, and the teacher recommend her to do not choose it)

d) After i drop photography in year12, i have 2 choices. (1)doing japanese extension(3units)+math ext1(3units) or (2) doing japanese continuer(2u)+math ext2(4u). I heard that I have to do HSC math 2units test at the end of y11, with y12. (accelerated class..right?) I don't know how hard math 4u is and i've got 100 in half yearly math test in y10(now) but i've already learnt about them before i came to australia so the test score in y10 can't be used to estimate my math ability i think...

f) Business VS Economic! which one is better in each term of scale/amount of work/relation with accountant job?

g) To get better ATAR score, do you think doing 12units in y12 is good..? cuz ATAR is for the best10units subjects..so..?

THANKS for reading all of this!!!:)

hey in terms of scaling, economics scales better but business studies is a lot easier so it would be easier to attain a band 6in. Economics is probably better if your willing to work hard because it will help boost ur atar if u do well :)

12 units is good for a backup in case you do bad in one, so it is recommended. Different things can happen such as nervous breakdown during HSC so if you stuff that up you still got other ones.

hmm i will do work hard anyway but isn't business studies boost my atar if i get band 6 in business?
and whats the minimum score for economic to get advantage than business?
(e.g. it's better to get 85 in economic than 95 in business)
or like (if i get lower than 85 in economic, it can't help boost my atar than business)

thx for advice :)!!
so if i just pretend like i choose economic(instead of business) and visual art(instead of DT),

I'm doing 14units during first 4weeks of y11 [esl+math3u+photography+japanese continuer+economic+visual art+accounting TAFE]
and then i will have 2 choices after 4 weeks to make 12units (1) drop Tvet accounting(=fiancial service) or (2) drop one either economic or japanese

and then in y12, drop photography and do 12 units like this : esl+math4u+va+ 2subjects from jap/eco/acc

is it good??? :) soz for massy info... :(

Yea it should be good as long as you do well in them and like doing it. As long as you have 12 units in the end it should be good.

The gap is nowhere near that large. It depends on the mark really, because scaling converges as marks get higher i.e. there is a bigger difference in scaling between an 80 in physics and business then a 95 in both subjects.

hi, yea if u get a band 6 in business it definetely wont drag your atar down, but i know someone who got around an 87-88 for economics which then scaled to 95a few years ago. My careers advisor said getting in the high 80s in economics will most likely get u a better scaled mark then getting a 92 for example in business studies. This link kinda helps explain scaling, http://www.matrix.edu.au/blog/scaling-of-hsc-marks-part-2/. It is possible that getting an 85 in economics could potentially be better than 95 in business :)

i would probs say high 80s in economics would be harder to get because it is a harder subject. I was going to do economics but my commerce teacher said that he didn't think many people were capable of doing it!

Its highly highly unlikely. I mean, its theoretically possible that CAFS could scale more then MX2 but that doesnt mean it will happen.

hahah anything over 88 in economics will boost ur atar over business!
This is completely false. Sure business scales less then economics, but there comes a point where business can outscale it (at a guess, I'd say an 88 in economics equals roughly a 92 in business). Also, dont forget scaling converges in the 90's.

my mistake, i apologise but my careers advisor did tell me that economics scales ALOT better then business. So ur saying that if i got a 94 in business it would be better then an 89 in economics?

Yes it probably would. Scaling changes every year, so its impossible to say with 100% certainty - but it would be unlikely that a 94 in business would scale less then an 89 in economics.

Economics does scale well but for good reason - it is a difficult subject. For the majority of people, business studies would be a lot easier.

but i just played with ATAR calculator by putting some random number in business/economic score
and i get maximum scaled mark for business is 48.5(even i put 100 in hsc mark) and for economic is 50 (i put 98 for hsc mark)

anyway.. im still confusing what do i hav to choose :(
