PLEASE CLARIFY, This is the impression I get of yr 12:
1. Nothing counts but RANKS, until end of year exams that is
2. ON exams, you do the exam, then your mark is basically DUPLICATED
3. From your mark of say, 95, You get one mark of 95 as your EXAM MARK, and someone else gets an ASSESSMENT MARK of 95, through their RANK (Unless you are first rank, in which case you just get 95 exam mark and 95 assessment mark)
4. Ultimately you have an exam mark, and an assessment mark, and the assessment mark is the mark that corresponds to the ranked score that matches your score IE, IF YOU GOT A MARK OF 90 FOR ADV ENGLISH, AND WERE RANKED 5TH, then someone else would get your mark of 90 and you would get the 5th highest EXAM MARK achieved by your cohort.

SO the question is, is the assessment mark DIRECTLY the matching ranked mark and your course rank, or is there a little boost or reduction in between?

All im saying is I dont want to be getting 90 in adv english but bcuz I suck at english I'd have to rely on someone elses exam mark directly. What if my rank corresponds to a shit ranked mark? that would be bloody sooo depressing...

What your saying is a misconception as everyone thinks that.

What happens:

- 1st ranked gets the highest assessment mark, and last gets the lowest assessment mark.
- The marks between these two are moderated according to difference in raw marks, and assessment marks are applied accordingly.
- Usually your assessment mark coincides with the exam mark of your rank, or at least close, hence the misconception.

So really it's not all about ranks, as difference in raw marks plays a part if your not first. If second is really close to first then they're assessment marks will be really close if they both go well in the exams.

Wtf dat confusing.... so say you get 95 in the HSC exam for MX2, but are ranked 20th in a class of 20. Your 95 in the HSC MX2 is the highest mark in your MX2 class, the 2nd highest mark was 70 attained by your classmate. So you are ranked last, but in the HSC you smashed everyone. WHAT FINAL HSC MARK CAN YOU EXPECT TO GET? If school has 3-5 99+ ATARs per year?

O btw are state ranks calculated on simply the HSC exam itself, for any given subject, OR does it include marks throughout the year?

Well if your last, then the lowest HSC external mark will be your assessment mark. So if you got 95 external, and the lowest in your class was say, 70, then your results would be as follows:

Assessment Mark: 70

Exam Mark: 95

HSC Mark: 83

O btw are state ranks calculated on simply the HSC exam itself, for any given subject, OR does it include marks throughout the year?
State ranks are determined by your HSC mark (i.e average of external and internal), so to state rank it is crucial you come first in that subject, unless you go to a top selective school where you don't have to be first but close.

Last year in French continuers, the person coming 2nd got a state rank - you don't need to be first (but have a really good cohort at least)
