how hard is the final HSC exam compared to trails?
Would be much harder for you.
But literally, in general the trials are always aimed to reach the 'HSC Standard'.

The real difference is in the harsh marking critera and how strictly it is followed compared to the average school. The majority of students don't realise that as the difference is offset (and some) by the moderation process. You'll also find there won't be dodgy questions in the actual HSC but that often can't be said about trials.

This is true, especially for Science (at my school in particular). In school, not only is there dodgy questions but also dodgy marking scheme and so, ranks can only give a rather mediocre indication of where you lie.

I've been told by many teachers and previous students that the trials are harder than the actual hsc exams

As with the marking, my teacher (HSC marker) said that they are more lenient as they understand the pressure of the HSC etc. so i'd assume marking would be similar, if not, easier than how your school marks you (usually your school marks *harder* than HSC markers anyway)

All rumours. I know a lot of HSC markers say this and i think a lot of them are actually going on the assumption that students believe the mark they get in the hsc is their raw mark. The marking criteria in some subjects such as chemistry is notoriously strict.

Don't worry about it but just wait until after hsc, and either apply for your raw marks or wait until other people with kind of comparable marks have done it. Despite all the extra effort you put in for the HSC you'll find your raw marks are lower than what you got in the trials. Unless, ofcourse, you go to a selective school or a top ranking private school. There isn't usually much variance with maths either.
