Hey Guys! :)

For my belonging assessment, we are required to write a speech comparing 2 of skrzynecki poems with 1 related text.
Problem is, how do you compare 3 texts altogether in a speech or essay?
I'm so used to only comparing 2 texts in a response, so when we're asked to compare 3 texts...I feel kinda out of my comfort zone...
Is there a specific structure or rule that I would have to follow?

Please help.
Thanks! :)

It's only poems, it's fine. I did practice with 3 prior to the HSC in case it directly asked for two. Oh and my poetry module I referred to three poem.

Pull your main three ideas out and explore them with reference to the three texts (you may not necessarily refer to all three per theme but rather the most relevant two)

There are two approaches you can take, either a theme-based approach, or a text-based approach.

For a text-based approach, just talk about each text at a time, bringing out the main themes as a way to link them together.

Eg.

Intro

Text 1 - Theme 1, Theme 2

Text 2 - Theme 1, Theme 2

Text 3 - Theme 1, Theme 2

Conclusion.

OR

Theme-based approach, where you focus on the theme, and pull in each text as appropriate to illustrate the theme.

Eg.

Intro

Theme 1 - Text 1, Text 2

Theme 2 - Text 2, Text 3

Theme 3 - Text 1, Text 3

Conclusion.

The number of themes you talk about will depend on what your time limit is for the speech.

Good luck! (and hopefully this isn't too late)

I would always aim for the second. Is it true comparison if you consider them in isolation? Integration shows typically you have engaged with the multiple texts in a more holistic sense.

The second is a more sophisticated approach, so definitely the preferred of the two, but it can be easier for some students to link if it's more clear-cut like the first structure is. It's still comparison if you're using the theme to link them together, you're just going about it in a different way. You would have to be very clear with linking sentences and synthesis of argument though.

It would be possible to do a high level response in the first way, but I see it is often used by student's struggling to wrap their heads around the texts. Stylistically, I have always have preferred an integrated approach, and typically these students receive in the upper echeleons of the marking if they do it in a logical and clear way.
