So I failed my first task in Mathematics (2U) and I am so disappointed in myself. The exam was horrible! I was wondering if this would dramatically effect my ATAR in the long run as it is worth only 16% I am aware it is mainly based on the ranking, my ranking was pretty bad as well.....

16%? Odd weighting in my opinion but remember, there is still time to turn your situation around - it's only the first assessment anyway. If you remain consistent and do well within the subsequent assessments, especially in the ones that weight most such as the trials, then I believe that you can improve your ATAR and that your first assessment will not dramatically affect your ATAR. It's low in weighting anyway, so I think the effect is not that bad.

This pretty much - it is impossible to predict how much it will affect you, but chances are the impact probably wont be too bad. You have plenty of time to turn things around so shift focus towards the future.

Thanks guys! I also was wondering is it true that the marks of the internal assessments aren't really looked at when it's sent to the board but it's more the rank that is looked at??

They would look at the highest and lowest internal mark gained from the highest and lowest external scores, where they use the ranks and relative gaps to determine your internal mark. So I think they'd look at ranks a little bit more.

Aim to rectify anything that you got wrong in the exam. If you sit there and say "Omg I knew how to do this", then redo the question. The same type of question is going to show up in the future.

I think D94 pretty much has the best explanation for it when he says they look at your position in the cohort. Your position is determined by your rank and the relative gaps between you and everyone else. The actual physical mark itself cannot really indicate anything to you - for example, a raw internal mark of 80 could become a moderated internal mark of almost anything.

It is impossible to say with any certainty, but it is possible for you to improve in rankings, especially given how early into the HSC you are.

Yeah, it's just I wanted to know if it's still possible to get a high ranking! In my prelim course I came 1st and 2nd throughout the whole year so I'm still hopeful. Thanks!

Yup I know in theory that I should always go back and complete a self assessment but then in practice, I hate looking over bad marks - so cringeworthy. eep!

Who doesn't hate looking over bad marks? Although, it is for the greater good. It will prevent the same mistake from occurring in the future which can cost even more to you e.g. In the trials and the HSC exam itself.
