As a result of changing my mind in terms of degree preferences, I've chosen to accept a late offer to UNSW. I've begun enroling and unfortunately there's a clash between two subjects, ARTS1480 and ARTS2630. They both appear as RED when I try to enrol in them :/

I was wondering what classifies as a "permitted clash"? According to (http://www.timetable.unsw.edu.au/2013/ARTS1480.html) and (http://www.timetable.unsw.edu.au/2013/ARTS2630.html) the lectures only seem to clash by one hour. Is there any chance of me enrolling into both of them at all? As an aside, I've also noticed that last year they had more lectures/tutorials available for both which is unfortunate... Did you read this section in red? (for ARTS2630)

Students who wish to enrol to the course without the necessary prerequisites must visit the School of Languages and Linguistics website for information of placement procedures. Prerequisites: ARTS1631 or permission of Program Convenor. Lectures and tutorials commence from Week 1.
What degree/program are you doing? ARTS2630 requires you to have done ARTS1631 or JAPN1001. Even if you have permission (from above), I doubt you will have done enough units to begin a Level II course.

Alright, for the intermediate level, ARTS2630 is a Level I course, so that's fine.

So as for permitted clashes, you can argue if you do do ARTS1480 in semester 1, it puts your language component on hold for second year (since it's not offered in semester 2). You'll also need to convince your program authority that it won't be a problem for you.

However, if you begin your language component in second year, it should be all right in terms of your program structure. If this is possible, your program authority will most likely suggest this route and ask you to choose another elective.

I would say most likely yes, but I'm only speculating. The main issue they will raise is keeping up with the content, but again, you should raise the point about it being only offered in semester 1.

Thank you so much, I really needed an outside opinion on this. I personally don't think I would suffer as much, because the French lecture is split over two different days and I can just fully attend the Japanese lecture on one day and miss French Lecture 1 of the week, and attend the second one later on :)
