I think most first years would love to be equipped with tips on how to approach uni. Whether you would change anything. Or just your tips in approaching uni life and maybe the balance between work and play.

"Make more of an effort to meet people in your classes."

Oh, and "Don't cram. Actually try and do the work and keep up with it - so you don't sit like a stunned mullet in tutorials when they're going through content you haven't touched".

Also join societies.

MathSoc I hear is exceptionally good. And ArtsSoc is also super fun-erific if you are an Arts student.

What does the mathsoc get up to? I only have one maths subject (I'm doing med science) but I am keen on the maths!

Care to explain why?
Well... essentially because uni isn't just about your education. There's a social aspect to it as well.

For instance, I'm in an Advanced Maths degree. Very specialist - there's only 100 of us. And in first year maths, and in second year maths, there are the same people in the classes - you see them, they see you. If you're not going to be social and just sit by yourself, well... that's all good and well - but you won't meet people, you won't make friends, you won't make connections.

Who knows, maybe one of these people will know someone you can get a job with, maybe one of these people know a pretty girl (or guy, if you're into that), maybe one of these people has a certain job prospect you hadn't considered and you and that person can go into that job later in life.

Or it can even be as vapid as: that person can be your study buddy for the semester, or that person can be someone you can plan timetables with next semester so you're in the same classes, or that person can be someone you can leech answers off or something.

I just think people should meet people because there are lot of people at uni, and if you don't make the effort to meet people then... you're losing quite a lot of the university experience.

I always thought oh why not start afresh at uni and become a lone person in lectures, sitting by myself on the grass etc. But since I started going to uni (bridging course), I know that I cannot survive without talking and befriending people. To all those aspiring loners, it just does not work. I can't see it working in the long term anyway.

Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends.
