Hi all,
As you might know, all the offers made by Australian universities are out now and I've got a difficult decision to make- which uni and which course? Although I said earlier I don't really know specifically what I'd like to do, I do know that I would like to do something business-ey (if that makes sense).

My three offers are:

1. Macquarie University's Commerce/Applied Finance (Professional Accounting)
Pros:
- the only assumed knowledge (if I choose intro stats) is general maths.
- a few of my cousins have done the course. They confirmed that the course is solid (prepares well for the CPA exam) and the lecturers are decent.
- the course is relatively well known both here and overseas

Cons:
- Around 1.5 hours long train trip to and from uni
- Macquarie isn't in the Go8 (best 8 unis in Australia). As such, I've heard that investment banks don't usually consider Macquarie candidates unless they do extremely well (e.g. honor students).
- The exams are known to become very difficult especially in the 3rd and 4th years.
- None of my friends are going to Macquarie and I heard that there wasn't much social life (due to large amount of international studies) :(

2. Arts at Sydney University (majoring in economics and pyschology)
Pros:
- all my friends are doing combined arts degree or doing a junior unit in the arts faculty
- I get to try psychology and film studies (later, I might even dabble in performance studies or digital media!) which I've always had an interest in but never managed to do at school because of my parents (i.e. they won't let me since they said they don't scale well).
- Sydney Uni has the best arts faculty in all of NSW. Also, for better or worse, it has the "prestige" factor since Sydney Uni is arguably the top uni still.
- I may get to transfer to a straight economics degree if I do well enough after first year. Don't know how useful that will be for future employment though (although I know economics prepare you for CPA also).

Cons:
- Arts has bad reputation
- Problem getting employed?

3. Resource Economics at Sydney University
Pros:
- again, having friends is fun
- sounds like an 'all-rounder' course what with getting to choose from the science, maths, arts and even law faculty (always wanted to try commercial law!)
- getting to attend the "best" uni and doing a "decent" bachelor

Cons:
- I emailed their faculty and got told there were like 50 people total doing the first year course. I can't help but wonder if this was due to the fact that there weren't enough resources as, surely, an atar of 83 (cut off mark) is not that hard to obtain?
- I am worried about mathematics extension 1 being 'presumed knowledge'. The people I asked online likens the difficulty of the maths proportion to maths extension 2 even...that's no good for someone who only got 41/50 (E3) for 3u maths lol.
- Not too found of agriculture. I grew up in the city and I can't help but think that I don't want to end up on a farm or spend large amounts of my time out in rural areas.

Not sure: How employable I would be upon graduation?

So yeah, please help if you have anything to say AT ALL. I am really stuck and O week is in 18 days. If it helps, I got all band 5 (87, 88 and 87 lmao) for business studies, legal studies and economics for my HSC. Which one would you choose if you were me and why?

Ta!

i would choose option 1 since i was in a similar situation and chose the better course at uts over the better uni at usyd and doing a shittier course.

and also ive heard that macquarie has one of the better social lives out of all the universities and their amount of international students is no more than the other universities

Always course first imho-the uni you can do your preferred course at, or the uni where that course is best.

No use going to one of the overall "best" unis if you can't do your preferred course there or another uni specialises in it.

If you got 41/50 for Extension 1 Maths, you'll be fine. I got 36/50 iirc and I've coped perfectly fine with the maths aat uni.

In terms of careers, you don't have to work in rural areas. Many graduates go onto work at banks, consulting firms and the like.
