I'm in Year 11 and things haven't been explained to us about Year 12 (yet) which is coming soon and I don't know whether this is possible or just a rumour but I've heard that in Year 12 you have the choice to drop a 2 unit subject from Year 11's 12 unit course or just keep it as a sort of safety net.

I also heard that you can do 14 units. I'm confused. I don't really understand how you could possibly do 14 units as there isn't time at school -before and after school perhaps? But still, the subject that is the extra 14 units, it wouldn't have been studied prior and so does the work not coincide with Year 11 work and just starts at the beginning of Year 12? Also, is there a cost for the extra work and because the teachers have to take their time etc. and do only specific subjects apply to this because I'm really unsure about what all this is that's going on. I'm guessing it varies from school to school though do classes only exist due to popular demand so if only about 10 people want an extra class, it wouldn't run?

Oh and my apologies for putting this thread here if it wasn't supposed to be.

Apart from dropping you may also choose to pick up an extension course which will count for one extra unit. You have to do a minimum of 10 units for the HSC and so if you have over 10 units, they will take your best 8 units + 2 units of English - which is the "safety net" in which you are able to fall back on in case you mess up a subject during the exam.

Yes it is possible to do 14 or even 15 units if you have already completed an accelerated course within Year 11 (I did IPT which counts for two units and i'm sure there are others) but this does not leave you with very many free periods during school. Doing over 12 units is not worth the effort as they will only take 10, and the extra time you put into a subject and having it not even count could be better spent on refining your other ones.

Regarding class sizes, it really depends on the school, but my school has classes running with under 10 students.

1. You do have the choice to drop a 2U subject or to keep it.
2. Most people wouldn't do 14 units it is way too much to do (unless one subject has already been accelerated). About the cost, there isn't any extra costs involved.
