I'm currently in Year 11 and living in the Parra area, but I'm planning to go to USyd next year.
What I wanted to know is mainly about social aspect of uni.
Is there any prejudice against people from Western Syd in the uni?
Also, would it be difficult to make friends during say O-week or something, while people just write me off because of where I live?

Thanks guys

lol, worry about getting in first.

I'm still in year 12 but i doubt it, the only people who would give a shit where you live are people you wouldn't want to socialise with anyway... I have a few friends from my school who are now at UNSW, UTS and USYD and haven't experienced what you are saying.

Hahah yeah I guess I was just overreacting.
Its just that I was at a party a few weeks ago and there a few guys from Newtown High, who were kind of pretentious and had this elitist attitude.

Has anyone who goes to USyd experience this elitist attitude.

Just remember that anyone with an elitist attitude at such a young age are likely relying on mummy and daddies wealth/status to get anywhere in life. Being born with a silver spoon in your mouth isn't much to be proud of.

Can I use this? :haha:
Go ahead, but I think most pretentious people do think it's something to be proud of and that any one who thinks otherwise is jealous. I just personally think it's more respectable for someone to be "self made".

I'm not saying everyone born into wealthy families are bourgeois scum, but in the case of university/jobs it's nonsensical for people in that position to judge people who aren't - they should be congratulating you (in a non patronising way haha) for achieving as much as them with the odds supposedly stacked against you.

You get pretentious people at USYD just like you get them at any university or any workplace.

In all honesty 99% don't give a stuff where you're from. As long as you're a decent person, you're all good.

I dont go to USyd, but I go to a private uni which has a high proportion of students whose parents are quite wealthy and I havent really noticed any elitism at all. As mentioned above, most people could care less.

I haven't noticed any negative attitude being taken against those from the west(if Parramatta can even really be called the west :p). Most of the people I've met at uni are somewhat from the west. And their biggest issue seems to be the fact they have to be up really early to get to uni.

IMO You're not living in the west until your living in Macarthur...like me. It takes me 90 minutes both ways.

Really, nobody gives a fuck about where you're from - at university, most of them are intelligent enough to realise that it's not about where you come from but rather, it's about the person you are and what you make from what you have.

That's what's really important.

University should be teaching people not to think like that. I come from Rouse Hill, not really culturally west, but distance-wise it's manageable.

The people here are fine though, I know plenty from the Blue Mountains to Penrith and Parramatta, and you wouldn't be able to tell.
