I really need to ace this exam in hopes of being in advance English and not having to bring my parents in to complain (embarrassing...) so i'm starting to prepare for my exam on Wednesday. It's half hidden text/ essay, the topic question is how is does anne frank overcome adversity, most likely relating to the unseen text on the day. Any tips to prepare for this exam? How to improve on my essay? and how can I be fully prepared for this test?
This practice essay got a 18/20 but I know I can improve so much more because my quotes aren't that analysed that well as much as it could. So tips?
- When is Anne faced with adversity and how does she overcome them throughout the novel?-
In the study of adversity, it is defined as hardships or difficult periods in a person's lifetime that may be overcome by facing several complications. The Diary of Anne Frank was written by a 12 year old Jewish girl who lived in Amsterdam with her family during the period of the Holocaust which was the genocide of over six million Jews, disabled, gypsies, children or anyone that the Germans had seen to be inferior to them. To escape this inevitable fate of Anne's family, they decided to escape and hide in a small room in which she called the "Annexe" where throughout the diary; transformed from a spoilt, rich, adolescent girl to a somewhat mature woman. The change throughout the auto-biography is present from the moment she describes her life before the invasion of the Nazis up to the point where she reflects on her life, two years after she goes into hiding as she is able to change mentally and attitude wise.
In a diary entry dated, Saturday 20th June 1942, Anne's family had to overcome the most adversities when there were changes to all the lives of Jews when Hitler introduced new laws to the whole of Germany in a small period of time. "Our freedom was severely restricted by a series of anti-Jewish decrees: Jews were forbidden to ride in cars, Jews were forbidden to use trams," from this extract we can clearly see that she can see that the Germans are taking over and Jewish lives were changing from the harsh words she used, as well as the negative connotations she creates with the words "restricted" and "anti-Jewish decrees" which shows the power that the Germans had over the Jewish, and she felt that Jews had been slowly being alienated by society, although she is able to overcome this adversity by being an optimist and seeing the good side of life which is that Margot, her mother and father as well as herself were still during well during that time.
In an entry later in the diary on the 8th of July 1942 when the Frank family had the most change in their lives is when the time that Margot received a call-up notice in which then Otto hastily decided that it was time to go into hiding. In result of this Anne felt that she was in danger and felt an uneasiness from not being able to farewell to her friends. That then placed additional stress to the situation from Anne’s expression “It seems like years since Sunday morning. So much has happened it’s as if the whole world had suddenly turned upside down but as you can see Kitty, I’m alive all right, but don’t ask where or how” In this quote we can clearly see that she was under a lot of stress from the hyperboles she used as she tried to describe the current situation she was in, emphasizing her how long she felt Wednesday was and how that she felt the sudden change in her life through what she had experience in a few short days. She was able adapt to the current situation her family by quickly analysis what the situation was and how she got there but still lacks thinking about the seriousness or consequences of her situation when she writes in her diary “but don’t ask me where or how” but overcomes this situation nonetheless.
Transformation is shown throughout the autobiography when Anne began with being a twelve year old girl that was an ignorant and self-absorbed to a somewhat more mature woman, as she felt that she has changed a lot from living in life in the Annexe, it all seems so unreal. "The Anne Frank who enjoyed that heavenly existence was completely different from the one who has grown wise within these walls.” Through the use of alliteration and juxtaposition, Anne has clearly been able to reflect back on her past and compare herself from when she was a twelve year old girl to a fourteen year old girl. In which we can clearly see that she has identified herself to be more experienced and realistic living in the Annexe, while compared to old self she was a more carefree, self-obsessed girl from two years ago which is observed as two years ago when she was able to give advice for living a happy life, 'Go outside, to the country, enjoy the sun and all nature has to offer. Try to recapture the happiness within yourself and God; think of all the beauty in yourself and in everything around you and be happy.'
Before she had only started to live in the Annexe during the time she had a fight with the Van Daan family and Mrs. Van Daan comments that she's a very honest person, to that Anne responds in her diary "have you ever heard anything so ridiculous? This sentence clearly illustrates that she's not exactly what you'd call modest!" from this we can see that she was quite tempered when she was twelve from the use of short sentences, the use of exclamation and rhetorical question we can sense that she is harshly judging Mrs Van Daan for her comments. While comparing this to her current self when she is faced with adversity in a similar situation, when for the past few days there had been quarrels over the food in which she responds by writing in her diary "there's no reason for me to go on describing all our quarrels and arguments down to the last details. It's enough to tell you that we've divided many things like meat and fats and oils and are frying our own potatoes." from this extract we can clearly see the difference in response when faced with two arguments of equal difficulty to resolve as in this quote, she was a lot calmer and didn't choose to vent her anger out that much but rather has a neutral feeling of how the issue was resolved as she speech has no exclamation, which makes us realise that she is not hostile about the situation compared to herself two years ago.
In the Diary of Anne Frank, adversity has been shown in many chapters of her life because of the fact that she is a Jew living during an era where the Germans had control over everyone that they considered to be inferior to them, Anne is a Jew that starts off in the beginning as a spoilt but after she is forced into hiding and lives her teenage years in the Annexe, she is able realise that she has grown up to be more mature and realistic.
