So basically if i get a bad mark for an in class assessment task and i feel that the mark i receive is unfair, is there anything I could do? What if I got a 2nd opinion from outside sources such as from tutors etc.? is there any way to argue to scab more marks?

You could go to your English head teacher to perhaps get your assessment task re-marked-but you will have to have very valid reasons for thinking the mark you receive is unfair-particularly in English, because it is such a subjective subject, even two similar responses, with similar content, if it was structured or expressed slightly differently, can result in different marks. Never quote a second opinion using outside sources such as tutors particularly if they don't have the relevant teaching qualification and probably won't have the HSC marking experience your class teacher have and it won't have any sort of authority-because it was your teacher teaching you the content and marking your work in assessment, not your tutor-different schools also have different standards. It is extremely hard and rare to scab more marks in English, the best you can do is ask for your teacher to look over the exam with you together, and understand why you got the marks you have gotten and what you can do in the future to improve it. It is much easier to argue about an unfair rank-because you can use marks to prove it-rather than an unfair mark in English

Teachers usually have a set criteria of how to mark against, so unless you strongly believe you met the marking criteria but it wasn't reflected in your mark, it might not be worth that much effort to appeal for marks. (it is generally v. troublesome) Talk to the marker about where you went wrong, and use it to bounce back for the next assessment task.

Never trust outside sources, unless you know they are 100% trustworthy. I was told my essay was going to get 20/20, but I got 18/20 and I thought that guy was trustworthy. (guess not, he didn't pick up on the major flaws embedded within my essay..grr) And it won't work in your favour to get outside tutors and stuff stepping in and supporting your appeal because teachers generally don't like that.

Yes, I think you misunderstood my last sentence, basically regardless of your marks, it is easier to argue about getting an unfair rank-because you can ask other people for their marks, and if someone with a lower mark has a higher rank than you-and it is the first assessment task you have done, obviously there was an error and you can ask your teacher to fix it your rank easily. But when you have an 'unfair mark'-it is much harder to rectify it.

i dont think ranks will be properly released from the teacher however classmates will prolly ask each other to figure out where they are ranked. maybe when we receive our half yearly report.....

speaking of which, what about those who wrote something thats not as good as yours yet received a higher mark?

you can try to show the teacher both that person and your work and try to argue that perhaps the teacher have marked inconsistently using the marking criteria-but I don't think your teacher will be too happy. The whole reason being 'those who wrote something that's not as good as yours'-is a subjective opinion, so your teacher might well disagree with it-my advice is still to talk to your teacher in a calm manner about your assessment task and see whether he/she changes their mind.

yea i guess thats all i can really do. i highly doubt i can go to that person and say "oh hey, your essay seems to be more crap than mine and u got a higher mark than i did so can you give me ur essay for the chance of getting a lower mark or for me to get a higher mark than you"

If you PM me your assessment task I will have it re-marked by an experienced HSC English teacher (who marked HSC exams) from another school for you. If you could also include any grade/comments that you received, that would be helpful in explaining why you got that mark (if it is considered to be accurate)
