Accommodation at Bathurst​

Students considering studying at CSU Bathurst have a range of options regarding accommodation. These include:

On-Campus Accommodation

On-Campus Accommodation

Im going to say this really simply. It makes life easier that way.

Towers:

Suits people who like to party and are fairly easy going. I dont mean lose but arn't completley uptight. There is always someone to drink with, there is almost always a party going on and there is always someone awake no matter what crazy hour of the night it is.

It is not particularly asthetically pleasing and yes the roumer is true... The building did win an architechtual award for fitting the most amount of rooms in the smallest amount of space. There are cracks everywhere but it is so much fun.

It is also the closest residence to the unibar and most of the lecturers buildings and lecture halls.

This is a catered residence


JOV:

is similar to towers in the respect that someone is always around and parties are quite regular.

The huts are alot nicer to look at but in my opinion are more flimsy. The walls are paper thin and you hear everything. And i mean everything. I think you get my jist.

There is a nice green an the middle of the huts which appeals to some people and it is a catered residence and slightly cheaper than towers but not much.

Oh and its a little further from most things but not far at the same time. 2-3 min walk so nothing terrible.


Diggings:

Is the main self catered residence and is typically alot quieter. Not to say there are not people there who like to party. But in saying that all my friends who have lived there say it is much more tame than other accomadation.

You get a bar fridge in your room and a lockable cupboard in the kitchen.


Windradyne:

most expensive residence and is fairly new and nice looking. Some of it is self catered and some is catered BUT dont quote me on that.

I dont know much about it but im sure there is someone that does.



MTG and Hargraves:

is the off campus accomadation which houses students. It is 1.7km from the campus and is self catered.

Again I dont know much about it so maybe someone else can help there.




Hope this helps. It all depends on our personality, patience and ability to tolerate shit sometime. But by no means is any of the accomdation a palace. haha

On-Campus Accommodation

Towers
Towers is meant to be the most social of all accommodation, however there are a few downsides to this. For starters, a lot people in towers have difficulty balancing work with their social life. Those who do want to work often have to put up with a lot of noise, non stop parties and constant distractions. While this may sound appealing, after constantly forking out a lot of cash to repeat failed subjects the novelty may wear off. It is also pretty damn ugly and there is not a lot of space in the rooms. Towers also has more people living on each floor than anywhere else. That aside, i don't know anyone who has lived in towers and not loved it. Most people who start out at towers tend to stay there- so there must be something going for it.


JOV
JOV is the other catered residence. It is roomier then towers and is also known for being quite social. As already stated, the walls are paper thin which can lead to people knowing more than they ever wanted about their fellow dormies.


Diggings
Traditional diggings have decent sized rooms with bar fridges in each room. The heating isn't great and ppl may with to bring a little fan/heater for summer/winter. There are 16 ppl on each floor and 2 levels to each building. There is a communal kitchen as it is self catered. New diggings is similar but has 'nicer' and newer interiors, better heating, single level cottages, etc. Traditional diggings and new diggings are both self catered. They may not be quite as wild as towers but they are both still very social and fun in their own right. No one living in these areas would complain of boredom or lack of a social life.


Windradyne
Poor Windradyne tends to get a pretty bad write up. Wyndradyne is split into cottages with 8 people living in each. New cottages have just been built and will be ready for this year, so there will be more people living there and it may or may not change the dynamic. Each cottage has shared kitchen, fridges in all rooms, ducted reverse cycle heating. It's known for housing the rich snobs, but in fairness self catered windradyne cottage are pretty much the same price as diggings and are a lot nicer. In reality there are overall more wealthy people in towers than windradyne despite popular opinion. You get a mixed bunch in windradyne- there are some people who like to keep to themselves, but there are others who are out parting hard and often. Because windradyne hosts both self catered and catered students, ALL windradyinians get the best of both worlds- they can partake in catered events such as dining in excellence and self catered events such as self catered ball and pub run.




At the end of the day the truth is that what you put in to uni is what you get out of it. So, you can be anti social and living in towers if you wish, or you can be stuck in windradyne but choose to party hard every night if that's what you want to do. So don't worry too much about the stereotypes, consider yourself lucky to be living on campus because it's a lot of fun no matter where you are. If you want a good social life then go out, make the most of uni bar nights, bands, pub runs, cindy ball, village fair, etc regardles of where u live. Uni is what u make of it- so make the most of it starting with O week.

Bathurst Accommodation

For students making the move to Bathurst here are your options:

On-Campus Accommodation:

There a various on-campus accommodation choices available and details can be found on this website: Residences, Your Home Away From Home - Charles Sturt University

Rooms vary in price from between $3,540.60 through to $10,916.85 per year.

Students who apply for on-campus accommodation are randomly selected via a ballot meaning there are no guarantees that the university will offer you a place on-campus.

Privately Run Student Accommodation:

Holmhurst Student Accommodation​

Holmhurst has room for around 35 students during the university year, with rooms costing between $105 - $125 per week.

The rooms are more private than on-campus, but still sociable as you're living among other students.

There is no ballot process (unlike CSU run student accommodation), however, Ramona will require that you come and look at the place in person as well as speak with you to see whether you're suitable.​

Shared House:

If you know a few friends who will also be coming to Bathurst for uni, you can always come up a week or two before O-Week and look for a private house within the Real Estates and share the rent. It can be a cheaper alternative to on-campus accommodation. The rule is the more people, the lower the expenses per-person (generally).

Real Estates will require that you inspect the property before hand because it is the law meaning you'll have to come to Bathurst. A lot of students come here and make a day of it by having a university tour, inspecting Holmhurst and inspecting rental properties with the Real Estates.

Most are fine, because the town relies on university students.

Pretty much there are heaps of houses vacant from the end of the uni year until the start of it.

As long as you don't have a bad Real Estate record, then you're fine.

They will check each and every person moving in, and any with a black mark against their name on the rental database (which is State wide) will likely be rejected.

Be warned, get in at least two to three weeks before O-Week if you want first picks at the better houses. Once O-Week starts, there will be none left.

There is also a house that is rented out to only females. Unsure if it is still operating but it has the nickname "The House of Vag".

I haven't lived in the cottages, but I can tell you from when I have been inside them, that they are by far the most attractive compared to other places offered on campus. Very modern, have own bar fridge in each room with net cable for laptop etc. Just make sure you apply for it asap coz its a very popular choice for students! Thats why I didn't get a place in cottages coz I made the mistake of applying too late! Hope I have helped.

New Residences

New Residences, or New Res for short, is, as the name suggests, the newest accommodation CSU Bathurst has to offer. It is self-catered, and your experience depends largely on what colour you are in. New Res has 200 beds, divided up into 5 colours (dorms), with two buildings making a single colour. Each building has 20 beds (4 for disabled students).

New Res has 200 beds spread over 10 buildings. There are 5 different dorms, specified by colour (Yellow, Red, Green, Blue and Pink), with 2 buildings in each colour. There are 20 beds in each building and obviously 40 in each dorm. Each colour gets their own Residential Advisor (RA).

Unfortunately it is the furthest from the body of the Uni, taking 5 minutes from the closest part of New Res to centre of uni. New Res does not really have that much parking dedicated to it, but there is plenty of parking next door in JOV which isn't that far away at all (sometimes closer).

What you get...
Your room
New Res is by far the 'cleanest', most well kept and most spacious of all the on-campus accommodations. The rooms are bigger than the others, but only slightly. In your room you get a desk, desk lamp, mini fridge (but the tiny-ass freezer is weak), cupboard (with one side being lockable. You get plenty of shelving (3 large + 1 small) along with two lockable compartments underneath your bed.

Commons
The kitchen is pretty big as well. You get an upright fridge/freezer which you share with the rest of the dorm, along with a massive chest freezer. Everyone gets their own lockable cupboard to store your food and/or cookware in. You have to bring your own pots/pans, plates, knifes and spoons, etc. There is a convection microwave and a regular microwave, two kettles, two toasters and an oven.

The rest of the commons is pretty spacious, with plenty of couches for watching Austar on, and two big tables for eating. One of the main advantages of New Res is the large common room for mixing and socialising with all your dormies. When you are just sick of being locked up in your room, downstairs (or down the corridor) in front of the TV is the perfect place to relax.

Dorm Life
Although I have only been here for 2 months, I have learnt that each dorm in New Res is very different. I am in Yellow and it is pretty chill here. One side is the quiet side, whereas the other is more 'party'. Red, from what I hear, is constantly noisy and is party party party. I imagine it would be a horrible place to actually study when you need to.

You make really good friends and you get really tight with your fellow dormies. Everyone always says theirs is the best, but I think New Res is pretty swell seeing as they are the best kept accommodation. At the end of the day, it is what you make of it.

In the self catered places, how much fridge/freezer room do you have? The website says you get a bar sized fridge in your bedroom, and somebody here says the new res also have shared normal fridges.

Is this the same for all self catered?
