I just don't understand - I did lots of practice for my tests, and yet I did average. Maybe I just didn't study smart enough or I struggled with problem solving questions.

You need to identify different types of problems-rather than just solve each individual problem based on its own merits-so understand rather than rote learn formulas, you need to do tests under EXAM CONDITIONS and mark yourself as strictly as possible. Never give up, I got below 50% for my first Maths Extension Test, but I never gave up

But how do you understand formulas, rather than rote-learn them?

Cause what I do now is when I'm given a formula, I question why it works like that.

Hawk, my maths teacher was talking about that today and he said: "instead of remembering rules, know why the rules exist and only that is true understanding", maybe try to look into why the formula works- it'll be easier in terms of application.

It isn't effective until you grasp the concept that is being conveyed by the proof (if that makes any sense).

Solving a maths equation is like solving a crime scene, you need to be able to analyse all aspects of the evidence effectively in order to solve the crime.

Alright then, say for example, the quadratic formula. I remember it, and I know how to substitute the values in, but I don't get how you go from the equation to the formula.
